Mexico exported 19 percent fewer automobile parts from January to October 2001, compared to the year-ago period, as a result of decreased demand for cars and car parts in the United States, reported Mexico City daily el Universal.
Total exports dropped to $6.8 billion during the period, down from $8.39 billion from January to October 2000, according to the National Autoparts Industry's (INA) preliminary numbers. The figure includes indirect parts, which are parts used in vehicles manufactured in Mexico that are then exported.
"Last year was difficult," said INA Economic Studies Director Omar Zuniga. Mexican autoparts manufacturers supply close to 60 percent of the parts used in Mexico, he said.
