Mexico may begin to eliminate all tariffs on automobiles from the European Union beginning in April, which will lead to a reduction in the prices for consumers and will increase competition for local automobile producers. Mexico already reached a mutual agreement with the United States and Canada to eliminate tariffs beginning last January.
Currently, there is a 2 percent tariff on vehicles from the European Union. European carmakers asked the Mexican government to review the tariffs and eliminate them, a step Mexico had been scheduled to take in January 2003.
