ADC (Nasdaq:ADCT) Minneapolis, has introduced Avidia(R) 3.0, an advanced new feature set for ADC's multi-service DSLAM designed to help put profitability into the digital subscriber line (DSL) deployments of global carriers. Avidia 3.0 helps carriers grow profitability by supporting high-margin broadband content delivery while at the same time reducing overall DSL deployment costs by leveraging a carrier's copper infrastructure.
Key features of Avidia 3.0 include high-density G.shdsl support for symmetric business services; T1/E1 IMA (inversed multiplexed ATM) for enhanced backhaul capabilities; double the ADSL port density for data, voice and video applications; 10/100 Ethernet uplink support with comprehensive IP functionality; and enhanced ATM capabilities including ILMI/PNNI 1.0, UNI 4.0 and end-to-end SVC support.
Based in Paris, France, LDCOM, is a satisfied Avidia 3.0 customer that is using G.shdsl to help grow its business.
"LDCOM was looking to add the type of services to our product mix that would increase revenues and margins," said Michel Paulin, executive vice president of LDCOM. "The service mix supported by Avidia, and in particular G.shdsl, has enabled us to expand our service offerings, grow business with existing customers and add new subscribers. The platform has been an ideal fit for accelerating our DSL business."
Rochester, N.Y.-based Frontier Communications is using the T1/E1 IMA feature of Avidia 3.0 to leverage its copper infrastructure in lieu of fiber build outs.
"With T1 IMA, Avidia now gives us the most economical solution for backhauling traffic from our copper-fed DLCs," said Richard Grogan, director of network planning for Frontier. "We've expanded Avidia deployments to include applications that would have required fiber, and now we're consolidating traffic over copper already in the ground. The savings in terms of both cost and time are enormous."
The 24-port ADSL subscriber module doubles chassis density and reduces per port power consumption by 40 percent. The 10/100 Ethernet uplink helps carriers with IP infrastructures to profitably deliver advanced services with high-margin revenues. These features, combined with the Avidia System's versatile chassis offerings -- both central office and environmentally hardened remotes -- provide carriers with extremely low-cost scalability and significantly improved price/performance.
Avidia 3.0 includes a variety of ATM enhancements that streamline the installation of equipment and the turn-up of DSL subscribers. Automated configuration and provisioning plus comprehensive ATM access is achieved with ATM UNI 4.0. ILMI/PNNI 1.0 provides advanced ATM management functionality, while end-to-end SVCs enable superior ATM switching capabilities and more efficient traffic handling.
