(OTCBB:OCCM), Santa Barbara, Calif., a supplier of innovative Ethernet and IP-based loop carrier equipment to telecommunications companies worldwide, has announced that Kaplan Telephone Co. Inc. (KTC) is using its Broadband Loop Carrier (BLC) system to deliver high-speed data services to the independent telephone company's rural business and residential customers.
KTC, which is headquartered in Kaplan, La., and has been serving South Central Louisiana since 1952, recently completed a successful two-month trial of several BLC units, resulting in deployment plans in rural areas currently served by remote terminals.
"The weather conditions can be quite challenging here in our part of Louisiana," said Carl A. Turnley, vice president at KTC. "It has been our experience that not all `hardened' equipment can survive deployments in remote terminals where there is extreme heat and humidity. The Occam BLCs not only survived our summer, they give us a quick and easy path for providing broadband services to subscribers that are served from remote terminals -- and at an exceptional pay back model over the well-known DSLAM vendors."
As a result of the BLCs' outstanding price-performance equation, KTC was able to deploy more equipment than was previously possible with the traditional DSLAM deployment model, which resulted in delivery of high-speed data services to areas where it was not previously cost efficient. The Occam equipment also permitted KTC to start competing quickly and effectively for new customers against a well-established cable company's hybrid fiber coax offering. The BLC allows KTC to easily and economically expand its DSL coverage while also supporting basic voice services.
"Placing Occam's BLC systems in remote terminals immediately provided KTC with a lot of opportunities to deliver revenue-generating high-speed data services that weren't previously possible by simply using a central office-based DSLAM," said Russ Sharer, VP of marketing at Occam Networks. "An increasing number of carriers with CO-based DSLAMs are seeking alternative vendors for remote DSL equipment after reviewing the price-performance equation of a next-generation offering like the Broadband Loop Carrier system."
