In memoriam: Charles R. Harris.
Charles R. Harris, 83, of Dover, DE died in September. His wife,
Anne Sheridan Harris, with whom he recently celebrated 59 years
marriage, survives him. Mr. Harris had three daughters and four sons, 11
grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
In 1984 he assumed the position of Executive Director of the
American Mushroom Institute (AMI). Following six years of his able
leadership and strong representation of the industry, he retired in 1990
to live with his family in Dover. Many AMI members will remember his
efforts to strengthen the trade association and his monthly column in
Mushroom News.
Mr. Harris received an undergraduate degree from State Teachers
College, West Chester, PA, and a Master of Education degree from Temple
University. He was a U.S. Marine Corp. veteran of WWII. He was a member
of many organizations including President of the Dover Lions Club,
President of Central Delaware United Way, Secretary of Delaware
Educational Television Association, and a member of the Board of
Directors of the Delaware Chapter of the American Diabetes Association
and YMCA Dover. Mr. Harris was also a member of Wesley United Methodist
Church in Dover for 52 years, and served as Chairman of its
Administrative Board. His book "Apathy to Awareness" was
published in 1969.
