Review targets Indoor Environment.
The American Mushroom Institute, the Pennsylvania State University
and the University of Delaware sponsored a Mushroom Review Program in
October to discuss Managing the Indoor Environment and the Mushroom
Crop. The program was a continuation of a popular class started last
year by Penn State's Dr. David Beyer and University of
Delaware's Dr. Ken Lomax. This year Drs. Beyer and Lomax, with the
assistance of Kim Paley, Penn State, discussed air velocity and volume,
the biology behind managing Phase II, the basics of heat transfer and
compost conditions at spawning. The hands-on workshop was designed for
entry-level supervisors as well as a review for experienced growers.
Lectures were short and most included demonstrations and activities
requiring audience participation.
Alma Rodriguez Estrada served as the Spanish translator for the
program. Attendees were tested on their knowledge of molds and diseases
and received a category pesticide credit.
A presentation by Joe McKeefrey and Mike Freeman, U.S. Department
of Labor (DOL), Wage and Hour Division, brought participants up to date
on compliance issues, the recent raise in minimum wage, housing
inspections, employee transportation concerns and the Internet Web site
e laws. McKeefrey and Freeman had posters and DOL materials available
and were eager to answer questions after the talk.
About 35 people attended the all day workshop held at the Italian
American Club in Kennett Square, PA.
