News media reports about the state of the economy or the allegiance of voters to a particular presidential candidate might vary on any specific day. But the power of franchising remains constant as it continues to fuel the dreams of entrepreneurs, especially military veterans. Veterans have acquired more than 1,000 franchised small businesses, according to a recent survey of the International Franchise Association's outreach program.

As of mid-March, the Veterans Transition Franchise Initiative or VetFran recorded nearly 1,100 military veterans have put their leadership and management skills to work and have joined those living their dreams of small-business ownership through franchising.

The recent survey also found that nearly 300 companies are now participating in the program. A listing of the companies appears below and is available online at www.franchise.org. The online list provides visitors the financial discount level that honorably-discharged veterans can obtain from participating companies. Each company determines the financial incentive and how it will be structured, but the company must offer a better deal than is offered to otherwise qualified investors. A discount of the initial fee is typical.

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs partnered with IFA to jointly-promote the program, which receives no government funding.
