Dose of reality; Evening Chronicle COMMENT.

Evening Chronicle (Newcastle, England) • Sept 4, 2008 • Leaders

DAY three and Kevin Keegan is still locked in talks with the United hierarchy.

The situation is like an episode of Big Brother, rowing housemates unable to agree on the way forward.

The only difference between the two is the outcome at St James's Park matters much more than any reality TV show to thousands of fans.

It is just 10 days to the next match and the players, however professional, must be extremely distracted by the circus around them.

Should Newcastle beat Hull it would be considered a decent start to the season - a 100% home record and one point from two of the hardest away fixtures they'll face this season.

Instead we do not know who will be at the helm. In all this the most important people of all are the fans.

They have supported the club through thick and mainly thin, watching each crisis with growing anger.

No-one can blame them for protesting and no-one would blame them if they voted with their feet.

It is difficult to see how this sorry saga will end but the fans will unite behind the team whatever. But Mike Ashley has much to do to convince them he has their interests at heart.
