Evening Chronicle (Newcastle, England) • Sept 4, 2008 • News

A PENSIONER is recovering after escaping from his burning bedroom today.

The 89-year-old managed to leave his semidetached house in Pinewood Close, Kenton Bank Foot, Newcastle, before firefighters arrived.

Firefighters from Gos-f orth and West Denton stations attended the blaze and a spokeswoman said the bedroom was 80% destroyed.

She said: "The fire is being treated as accidental and the cause is unknown."

A police spokesman said: "We attended but the man had escaped from the house prior to us arriving.

"The cause of the fire has not been established but it is not being treated as malicious."

The man suffered from inhaling smoke but did not need hospital treatment.
