Getting set for Olympics.

IT MAY be four years away, but the North East is already gearing up for the London Olympics.

The Cultural Olympiad will be launched this month with hundreds of events taking place across the country.

More than pounds 40m has already been earmarked for activities and dozens of events have been confirmed in Newcastle, Gateshead, South Shields and Sunderland.

A spokesman for the London Olympics said: "It is designed to fulfil the commitment that the London 2012 games will involve and inspire everyone in the UK and across the world.

"The programme also includes projects which have been awarded the Inspire mark, recognising the quality and diversity of the work of large and small organisations around the country which would otherwise not be able to take part.

"This will be a first for any Olympic organising committee, leading the way for other host cities after London to adopt this more national and inclusive approach."

Events will be held from September 26-28.

Jonathon Blackie, regional director of Government Office North East, said: "The Cultural Olympiad offers an excellent opportunity to showcase our region's cultural assets."

Mark Robinson, executive director of the Arts Council England, North East, said: "The Cultural Olympiad is a fantastic opportunity to raise the profile of the excellent art developed in the North East."
