Op led to death.

Evening Chronicle (Newcastle, England) • Sept 4, 2008 • News

A MAN died after complications with major bowel surgery.

Arthur Spark, 67, of Benton, Newcastle, underwent an operation to remove a tumour from his colon, but died shortly afterwards in what a pathologist said were unpredictable complications.

Part of Mr Spark's bowel had to be severed and then reattached to remove the tumour, but a subsequent leak led to a fatal infection. Surgeons at Newcastle's Royal Victoria Infirmary tried in vain to save him but he died on October 10 last year.

Newcastle coroner David Mitford recorded a narrative verdict and said: "This is the unexpected outcome of a necessary operation."
