JOHN BERESFORD is still hoping Kevin Keegan will be back in the
Toon managerial dugout when Hull City come to St James's Park in
eight days time.
Like the rest of the Geordie nation, Bez is waiting anxiously for
the conclusion of meetings between his old boss Special K and Mike
Ashley and the board which are crucial to the future of the club.
Beresford, though, remains convinced Keegan is the only manager to
lead the Magpies forward.
He told the Chronicle: "I hope the differences can be sorted
out and they can come to some kind of agreement.
"My personal opinion as a fan of the club is that Kevin has to
be in charge of the team.
"If he is not, it is just going to be catastrophic for
everybody and I think the club would simply go backwards.
"There is no other manager on the planet who can improve the
situation at the minute, nor anybody who understands the club better
than him.
"Nobody else can come in and takeover in the same way as Kevin
can."
Beresford, as a long-serving professional at top level for two
decades, knows the game inside out and how differences of opinions in
the game can cause havoc from the boardroom downwards.
However, in the delicate world of Newcastle United, he knows things
can be quickly forgotten.
With the club's next game with Hull still a week away, he
feels the problems could not have come at a worse time.
The lack of action this weekend because of the international break
is enflaming the situation as the media spotlight remains firmly focused
on Tyneside.
Beresford added: "I just hope that differences are put aside
for the good of the club. Kevin needs to be allowed to get on with the
job he has started.
"I suppose for the fans it is just watch this space, but it is
so frustrating for them to see what is going on."
Bez knows boardroom bust-ups do not always spell the end.
He added: "It is about different views again.
"When I played there were more than one or two big fall-outs
between Kevin Keegan and Sir John Hall.
"It is fine to have disagreements in a passionate game.
"The key is making sure you can recover from it."
