Evening Chronicle (Newcastle, England) • Sept 5, 2008 • News

A TEAM of employees swapped banking for bikes to help raise more than pounds 12,000 for charity.

Staff at Newcastle's Swedish bank, Handels-banken, together with eight colleagues and associates, pedaled the Coast2Coast route from Whitehaven to Sunderland for charities Macmillan Cancer Support and Marie Curie Cancer Care.

All of the bank's Grey Street team were involved in organising the effort.

Granville Kelly, individual banking manager, said: "Sadly, 2007 was a very difficult year for one of the bank's corporate managers who saw four members of his family succumb to cancer and I lost a close friend to the disease.

"Because of the care and support Macmillan and Marie Curie provided, we wanted to recognise this and are thrilled with the final amount we have raised "Friends, family, customers and professional colleagues have been so generous.

"One of our customers, Northgate, provided us with a vehicle to support the team on the 145-mile ride and Gate 7 supplied our tour T-shirts.

"Cancer can affect us all and the C2C charity cycle ride gave us an opportunity to help those who are suffering.'
