Juices fell too.

The Shopper Report • Feb, 2003 • includes survey results concerning attitudes towards juice consumption

Juice is another product that has fallen from its health pedestal, though not nearly as far as whole milk. "Juice is mostly sugar, even if it's natural sugar. I encourage my kids to eat fruit but buy juices only when they are ill or are having a party." Note the irony of avoiding juice to maintain health and weight but buying it to restore health when the kids are sick. Only 50% of our younger respondents and 56% of our older respondents try to drink juices as a way to stay healthy. This compares to 82% and 87% who try to eat fruit to stay healthy. In our survey, 17% of the younger and 12% of the older respondents said they avoid juice for health reasons.) No matter how bad it is, home cooking is still seen as a way to stay healthy by 82% (younger) and 81% (older) of our respondents. But fresh foods scored 86% and 89%, significantly higher than home cooking. Processed foods scored a miserable 10% and 12% -- almost as low as junk foods (9% and 4%) or fast foods (8% and 4%). Processed foods are among the top te n kinds of food that consumers think they should avoid to stay healthy.
