Not all of Raj Peter Bhakta’s entrepreneurial ventures have been home runs. Bhakta actually had enough fumbles early in his career that he questioned his own ability to build something great. But his latest company, WhistlePig whiskey, has been profitable since month one and brings in millions of dollars in revenue each year.
One of the most important lessons Bhakta brought to WhistlePig, which is headquartered on a 1,200-acre farm in Shoreham, Vt., is that to build a successful brand, an entrepreneur needs to have a crystal-clear vision of what he or she wants to accomplish.
“There is no reason that America can’t make the best whiskey in the world. There is no reason that it can’t be based on this farm,” Bhakta says.
Bhakta plans to have every part of the whiskey-making process -- from growing the rye grain to packing the bottles of whiskey -- on the farm. WhistlePig outsourced first batches of whiskey but has obtained a permit to build a distillery on premises and plans to break ground this spring with the goal of completing the distillery in a year.
