Most compact pickup trucks can handle your business's lighthauling and towing chores efficiently and inexpensively. Averagecargo length is 6 feet; seating ranges from three to six. Benefitsinclude prices starting under $20,000 and better gas mileage thantheir big brothers. Downsides are limited power and payloadcapacity. Let's look at three popular small pickups--the DodgeDakota, Ford Ranger and Tacoma.

The rugged $19,585 Dakota is an upscale club cab truck with theonly optional V-8 engine in its class. Full-swing rear doors easeentry and exit. The standard engine is a V-6; the transmission, asix-speed manual. The Dakota's safety features include ABS,energy-absorbing steering column, knee bolsters and side-curtainair bags. Payload: 1,700 pounds. Mileage: 16 city/22 highway.
