Senate sends message: hands off the office of advocacy

Attempts to shield the SBA Office of Advocacy from the influenceof political interests in Washington were rewarded in late Marchwith the passage of Senate bill S.395.
The Senate legislation gives the office an independent budgetline and prohibits any influence from the White House when it comesto appointing assistant and regional advocates. The choice of eachadvocate would be the exclusive preserve of the Chief Counsel forAdvocacy, a political appointee. Advocates must be "fromcivilian life" to show that they have a small-business ratherthan a government background.
