Mention hybrids today, and most people think cars, notsecurities. But the newest breed of products bearing thedesignation fuses elements of stocks and bonds rather thanelectricity and fuel.
Also known as income depositary securities (IDSs), hybridsecurities offer investors the regular payment of a dividend-payingstock and some growth opportunity, as well as the interest paymentof a fixed-income security. The investment structure is best suitedto IPOs in certain sectors-such as the food and telecomindustries-which have the steady cash flows to provide investorswith regular payments, but not necessarily the high-growthprospects that a typical IPO offers.
