It's back to square one for the SBA and its small-business size standards.

The is headed back to the drawing board to make new sizestandards for . Each U.S. industry is assigned asize standard, which sets the maximum number of employees a firmcan have and still qualify for SBA programs, exclusions fromfederal rules, and contracting opportunities. The SBA's firstproposal for changing size standards was released in March. Itwould have consolidated current size standards, which are based onannual receipts, number of employees and other measures, into 10categories based on employee numbers. It received a blistering critique from the SBA Office ofAdvocacy: "Some small businesses are concerned that adoptionof the proposed size standards will force them to reduce the sizeof their work forces to retain their small businessdesignation." The SBA withdrew the proposal.
