Last winter (1999), I drove from to on whatI'm certain was one of the coldest days of the year. Factoringin the windchill, temperatures must have plunged well below zero. Ifoolishly stored my notebook computer in my car overnight when Istopped at a friend's house in Princeton, ,completely forgetting it'd get icier than a deep-freeze afterdark.

The next morning, I took the portable into a diner to catch upon some correspondence. The wouldn't start-thekeyboard felt very cold to the touch; the screen was dark andlooked gelatinous. My heart almost stopped, and I thought:"This is it. I've just destroyed a $3,500computer."
