Tony Hawk on Making a Twitter Treasure Hunt Go Global -- and Viral

Opinions expressed by Entrepreneur contributors are their own.

It all started with one skateboard left on the side of the road by skateboard icon and entrepreneur Tony Hawk in 2009. He tweeted its location and within minutes it was found. Little did he know the excitement of that first random giveaway would ultimately lead to the annual Tony Hawk Twitter Hunt, which his nearly three million followers on Twitter eagerly await each year. It has become such a viral social media sensation with the hashtag #THTH, that it now includes a treasure hunt that spans the globe.

In this 'Trep Talk Extra, Hawk shares his thoughts on the one-day global giveaway -- and what you can expect from this year's treasure hunt on Sunday, April 15, 2012.

Tony Hawk's adventure sports empire includes skateboard company Birdhouse Projects, the Hawk Clothing line, a wildly popular video game series, and his production company 900 Films that teamed with YouTube this year to launch the Ride Channel. He has also donated more than $4 million to nearly 500 skatepark projects throughout the country through the Tony Hawk Foundation.
