At small and growing companies, each employee counts -- so hiring the right one for the job takes work. Business coach Ann Mehl advises asking questions that go deeper than the usual "what are your biggest strengths and weaknesses" to find out what each candidate can bring to the company. Mehl also says offering a short-term assignment can help determine if someone is a good match for the culture and workflow of your business.
