Handmade gifts from the heart are more meaningful, but cutting edge gifts may be better conversation pieces.

MakerBot, the 3-D printing manufacturer, gives your Valentine the luxury of both worlds. Since January, its retail stores have hosted Make Your Own Valentine events. It's a way to teach the everyday consumer how to use a MakerBot Replicator 2 Desktop 3D Printer, a device that many manufacturers, artists and architects have already discovered. Now, these MakerBot classes are schooling the everyday consumer -- and children -- on the basics of 3-D design.
