There's one thing a manager should never say to an employee: you will not move up here.
Even companies that aren't growing fast can help to define someone's career path and help them grow into what they want to become, even if it's outside the company," says Andre Lavoie, CEO of ClearCompany, a talent-alignment platform. "There's the famous saying, 'What if we train our people and they leave? What if we don't and they stay?' You have to give people an opportunity to evolve into who they want to be and help them realize their personal potential and growth."
This kind of leadership not only works out for that employee, but the company as a whole, Lavoie says. Training your people properly translates into a built-in succession plan.
