How Dr. Drew Conquered the Media Without Compromising His Integrity

Though says he was hesitant at first to "play ball" with producers of reality television shows when he was younger, Dr. Drew Pinsky -- who is now a household name around the world as Dr. Drew -- tells Behind the Brand host Bryan Elliott in this video how he learned how to think like a media personality without compromising his integrity as an established medical doctor.

Dr. Drew, who still practices as a board-certified internist and addiction medicine specialist has hosted the syndicated radio talk show Loveline since 1984. He also hosts the talk show Dr. Drew On Call on HLN and starred in the VH1 show Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew and subsequent spin-offs. 

He says that he did experience envious reactions early in his media career from older colleagues -- but once he got older and had more experience, "people didn't feel as ambivalent about me," he says.

"You just have to keep looking for opportunities to do what it is you want to do, and you have to be clear about what your mission is," he says. "People want television -- and I didn't really understand how to do that in the beginning, and so I would lose jobs and not be asked back on shows, because I wouldn't play ball. I didn't know what was needed for television -- conflict and intensity and volume and all kinds of stuff I didn't want to pay attention to."

"So under that would be -- have great counsel. Have a good manager," he says. "When they came to me with Celebrity Rehab, I said I can't do that, there's no way... but then I wondered, if I did non-hospital-based care in a residential setting and brought my team in, and we just filmed that -- that would work. And that was the idea, and that's what we did."
