The National Education Policy, 2020 brought in by the ministry education is radical in every sense. While the strategy points on numerous characteristics, comprising the necessity for initial childhood care, entire education and revamping of the latter curriculum, an intrinsic thread that runs through the policy is the interplay of education and technology.

Through the previous decade, India has renovated itself into an ‘information-intensive society’ and there is a thriving provision to grasp the procedure of technology in the region of education. In this respect, the policy notes that one of the central principles steering the education system will be the ‘extensive use of technology in teaching and learning, removing language barriers, increasing access as well as education planning and management’.

Online education after pandemic

According to Dr Anil Sahasrabudhe, chairman, All India Council for Technical Education chairman (AICTE ), the pandemic has forced people to adopt online education system who probably knew about it before but never strived to use it or learn how to use it.

On the issue of handling students in virtual classes, he said the blended mode of learning is different from offline or real classes.

With offline learning, students are compelled to transit to the training location, normally a lecture hall, college or classroom. With online learning, coaching can be supervised from practically anywhere in the world. Participants simply need to log on to the Internet from their residence, work or even their local coffee shop.

Next distinction is the flexibility delivered. Online knowledge usually has further creative timescale.

Besides these two differences, the benefits of learning online or offline are practically the same. Online qualifications are just as internationally recognized as offline ones and the standards of learning are also identical.

Benefits of online vs offline learning

Although online learning has become the preferred method for the majority of learners, it’s important not to dismiss the benefits of offline training too

With online training courses, you and the course attendees benefit from a more casual, flexible approach. Being unrestricted regarding location and times means every learner can benefit from the courses.

With offline learning, it’s simpler to assure attendees are spending attention to the training. Some learners also find it easier to maintain the proficiency and abilities they’ve learnt through offline exercise than they do with online exercise.

Online Learning is far less costly, more convenient and flexible, but one major thing to mention is the lack of social interactions online.

Drawbacks of online learning

With online classes, one does not get that morning coffee with classmates, small chats in corridors in between classes, the precious break during a long lecture where one can ask questions to teachers.

In that sense, online learning can become quite isolating, as the level of human interaction is kept to a minimum.

With online education, student to student engagement is very low.

There are less spontaneous debates in class and exchanges of ideas, as everyone is comfortably seated behind a screen, the screen maintaining everyone at a distance—both virtually and relation-wise.

Another aspect of online learning we might take into account is that, over time, and especially if the online class concerns younger students, this distance in relations with other people might cause a lack of interpersonal skills development.

With offline learning, young pupil are in a classroom, they cultivate significant qualities such as tolerance and team spirit, and most greatly, respect.

It can be difficult to establish the similar setting online, and for the teacher to build such a space online is very complicated.
