Students Say - Academics
"The Haas School of Business at the University of Californiaâ€"Berkeley offers students "a truly interactive environment," one in which "professors learn from the students as well as the other way around" thanks to students' substantial input into the program. The full-time program in particular is designed to provide students with an unusual degree of autonomy; explains one student, "Student initiative comes into play in every aspect of the program, from scheduling speakers to career search." Students here also design and run, with faculty oversight, a number of electives every semester. The result of all this freedom is that "students are forced to become entrepreneurs as part of their education." The small size of the program (only 250 full-time students and about as many part-timers) contributes to the experience by "forcing a collaborative environment where competition is put aside in order to help one another." Haas backs up its unique approach to graduate business education with a strong curriculum and a solid faculty. The school excels in social entrepreneurship, corporate social responsibility, general management, and technology; this last area capitalizes on Berkeley's location "across the bay from San Francisco and just one hour from Silicon Valley." The faculty includes a number of stars; boasts one MBA, "Our finance professor is serving as the president of the San Francisco Federal Reserve. Our Dean was on leave as [Governor] Arnold Schwarzenegger's Finance Director. They don't get better than this." Better still, "not only are the professors outstanding in their fields, but they are also highly approachable and willing to make changes to the class to meet the students' needs." Semesters move along quickly here; "The academic pace is very fast," students observe, "but the workload is not overwhelming." While the core "is solid," most here prefer the "awesome electives that give you some great opportunities outside the classroom." "

Students Say - Admissions
Applicants to Haas graduate programs must submit all the following materials to the admissions department: official copies of transcripts for all postsecondary academic work, an official GMAT score report, letters of recommendation, a personal statement, and a resume. Interviews are conducted on an invitation-only basis. In addition to the above materials, international applicants whose first language is not English must also submit official score reports for the TOEFL (minimum score of 570 for the paper-based test, 230 for the computer-based test). The school considers all of the following in determining admissions status: "demonstration of quantitative ability; quality of work experience, including depth and breadth of responsibilities; opportunities to demonstrate leadership, etc.; strength of letters of recommendation; depth and breadth of extracurricular and community involvement; and strength of short answer and essays, including articulation of clear focus and goals.

Students Say - Campus Life
"For full-time students, "student clubs are at the heart of the school" because they help organize student input to the program. Explains one MBA, "Nothing happens at Haas without student involvement. Just about every full-time student is heavily involved in all aspects of the school. From student government to admissions to industry clubs to sports and wine clubs, everyone is able to express their interests and tap their fellow students for more information or just someone to share a good meal." The administration "fully supports club activities and has our needs on their minds continuously. It is only with their aid that we have been able to accomplish so much in our short time here." Between classes, clubs, and other extracurricular options, "live is very busy" for full-time students at Haas. There are "groups constantly getting together to go to arts festivals, AIDS walks, golfing, cycling, surfing, skiing, attending seminars, hearing guest lecturers, and hiking, to name just a few activities. The opportunities are endless and everyone loves being here." Thursday nights "are a tradition at Haas. We have BoW (Bar of the Week) in Berkeley and San Francisco, so there are always fun places to check out as you get to know the area." Students also appreciate their "access to the Bay Area's business, culture, natural beauty, and geographic diversity. Networking opportunities abound because so many business and thought leaders either live in the area or pass through here." The "great, resourceful, creative, and mellow" students of Haas are "warm, but with a competitive edgeâ€"in the best sense of the word." Students speculate that "Haas' longstanding ‘no grade-disclosure' policy" results in "students who are extremely helpful to each other, making certain that learning is truly a collaborative process." Indeed, our survey respondents all agree that "students at Haas are extremely team-oriented. They very much work together to get things done. The Berkeley MBA attracts top-notch students from all over the world and we mutually benefit from one another's experiences." Adds one student, "Given how diverse the work experiences are here, I find myself learning from those around me every day. These are truly the type of people I want to work with and for after graduation." "

Students Say - Careers
"When it comes time to find a career, Berkeley MBAs benefit from their program's high profile and sound reputation. As is often the case at such schools, the Haas Career Center provides a broad range of excellent services. Students here benefit from one-on-one advisement, access to numerous online job databases, industry clubs, workshops, seminars, a mentoring program in which second-year students counsel first years in their search for internships, and a strong, global alumni network. Employers most likely to hire Berkeley MBAs include Bank of America; the Clorox Company; Deloitte Google; Apple; Bain & Co.; Boston Consulting Group; Abbott; Genentech; Amazon; Lehman, Yahoo!; Johnson & Johnson; McKinsey & Company; Microsoft; and Wells Fargo.
