Before investing money in a business, Shark Tank star and angel investor Barbara Corcoran will put its owner through the paces.

The first order of business is learning about the company's sales track record and how it was accomplished. "You can get a sense of the person's work ethic," she says. 

Corcoran knows what it takes to run a successful business. While most of America may know her from Shark Tank, the popular ABC reality show, Corcoran built her reputation as real estate entrepreneur in New York City. She sold her company, The Corcoran Group, for $66 million in 2001. She had started the business with a $1,000 loan from her boyfriend 28 years earlier.
