HELO to honor Cisneros at NALEO Annual Summer

NLC's Hispanic Elected Local Officials (HELO) constituency
group is pleased to announce that Henry Cisneros, an NLC past president,
will serve as one of its national leadership honorees at the upcoming
HELO Special Reception at the National Association of Latino Elected and
Appointed Officials (NALEO) Annual Conference in Washington, D.C.
The reception will be held during the conference's Assembly of
Receptions on Saturday, June 28, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the
Renaissance Washington D.C. Hotel.
HELO is honored that Cisneros, former mayor of San Antonio, Texas,
and former secretary of the Department of Housing and Urban Development,
has accepted its invitation to be recognized. As one of the
nation's most accomplished and influential leaders, HELO believes
he has made great achievements in strengthening the quality of life and
homeownership opportunities in cities and towns.
HELO will also be co-sponsoring workshops at the NALEO conference.
These workshops include "Latino Families and the Impact of the
Economic Crisis" from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on Friday June 27;
"State and Local Immigration Measures and Future of Our Immigration
Policy" from 2:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday; and "Winning
Women V: Latinas in Office" also from 2:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. on
Saturday. The HELO board meeting will be on Thursday, June 26 from 4:15
p.m. to 5:45 p.m.
In addition to HELO President Marie Lopez Rogers, mayor, Avondale,
Ariz., HELO's officers on its board of directors are Carlos Silva,
councilmember, Bridgeport, Conn. (first vice president); Sergio
Rodriguez, alderman, New Haven, Conn. (second vice president); Karen
Avilla, city treasurer, Carson, Calif. (treasurer); Adrienne Foster,
councilmember, Roeland Park, Kan. (secretary); and Joseph Maestas,
mayor, Espanola, N.M. (immediate past president).
