Autumn at Tsinandali Estate Begins with a New Exhibition

On September 6, Tsinandali Estate opened an exhibition dedicated to Georgian artist Giga Datuashvili. The exhibition offers visitors a closer look at the artist's creative world and the process behind his artistic exploration.
Giga Datuashvili studied painting restoration at the Tbilisi State Academy of Arts from 1993 to 1998. Between 1995 and 1998, he took part in restoration work on medieval church frescoes, and from 1997 to 1998, he taught drawing at the Dzegvi Children's Home. Datuashvili passed away on October 19, 2000, at the age of 24. The works, sketches and writings he left behind offer a rare insight into his artistic world, his interests and the questions that shaped his creative process.
Much of Datuashvili's artistic legacy survives through his numerous sketches and personal notes. His work is deeply rooted in spirituality, a Christian worldview, and a constant interest in art and literature. At the same time, it reflects his sensitive response to the complex and often contradictory reality of Georgia in the 1990s.
The spiritual and Christian themes that run through Datuashvili's work take on particular significance in 2026, as Georgia marks 1,700 years since Christianity was declared the country's state religion.
The fragmented and often unfinished nature of his works, together with the expressive figures and gazes of imagined and literary characters, creates space for reflection and interpretation. Presented alongside the artworks, Datuashvili's writings bring visitors even closer to his inner world and creative process.
The strength of his work lies in its honesty and simplicity. Through the sketches, texts and works on display, the exhibition invites visitors to discover Datuashvili's world, his interests and the artistic explorations he left behind.
