Students Say - Academics
The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill's Kenan-Flagler Business School offers a practical and progressive MBA program, with a faculty and staff "committed to making sure the curriculum reflects what students need to be successful after graduation." The program begins with a rigorous core curriculum that covers the full cycle of running a business. With an emphasis on case study and group work, students appreciate a core curriculum that is "extremely well-integrated, so that what you learn in one class will show up in a different context in another class." They also appreciate their school's staunch commitment to education, explaining, "When the core faculty is teaching, that's all they are doing-no research or travel-so they are available and willing to talk with students as much as needed." Consistently small class sizes further ensure that the "personal attention you receive from administrative staff and faculty is outstanding." A current student reassures, "On several occasions, I've been working late and had a question-there was always someone to help me out."
In the second semester, students begin to take elective course work, gaining "more in-depth knowledge of emerging business issues." The school is noted for "extremely strong marketing, entrepreneurship, and real estate programs," and for its unique sustainable energy concentration. Committed to innovation, 20 percent of the school's elective offerings change annually in response to new business trends. An excellent choice for those considering a career change or looking to expand upon their current professional experience, "The Kenan-Flagler MBA is not targeted [at] individuals who just want a generic management degree, but [at] those who want a degree tailored to their area of specialization." Students can further specialize their studies through courses "taken from other graduate programs within the broader university."
Kenan-Flagler's Dean James W. Dean Jr. runs the school like a well-oiled business venture, and consequently the administration is surprisingly responsive to student suggestions and concerns. UNC's administrators "take action when requests are made to change curriculum and administrative situations." When it comes to academics, "Student feedback is taken in the middle and at the end of the course. The feedback is incorporated into the new version of the course quickly."

Students Say - Admissions
The Kenan-Flagler School of Business admits students who demonstrate leadership and organizational skills, communication ability, interpersonal skills, teamwork ability, analytic and problem-solving skills, drive and motivation, prior academic performance, career progression, and career goals. The school recommends at least 2 years of full-time work experience before entering the program. No specific course work is necessary, but students must have knowledge of financial accounting, statistics, macroeconomics, and calculus. Last year's entering class had a median GMAT score of 690, a median GPA of 3.3, and professional work experience averaging 5.3 years. Qualified candidates are invited to interview from September through April.

Students Say - Campus Life
Located in a beautiful college town and blessed with an extraordinarily affable student body, life is good at UNC Chapel Hill. "Everyone goes the extra mile to help and contribute to the overall atmosphere," says one student. Another student observes, "The one word I'd have to use to describe the students at KFBS is 'dynamic.' I've been really impressed with the depth and diversity of their backgrounds, work experiences, and what they contribute to class."
While the workload is considerable, the life of a UNC MBA student is "very busy but very balanced." In addition to schoolwork, "Students at UNC are very involved in extracurricular and community activities." For example, "The Business School has its own Habitat House at which students volunteer every weekend." Students assure us that the social life outside of class is "vibrant, including tailgating on the lawn, black-tie casino night, and MBA Olympics against Duke." Off campus, "The Chapel Hill area is a great place for outdoors activities and the town has lots of bars and nightlife." Going out with fellow students is a popular pastime, and "Chapel Hill is especially great for single students because there's so much to do and so many people to meet." However, those who have already tied the knot are happy too: "I'm married, and I've found that KFBS is very accepting and helpful for the married students."

Students Say - Careers
Boasting a stellar reputation "coupled with one of the best startup/tech communities on the East Coast," Kenan-Flagler students enjoy great job-placement opportunities through the school's Career Management Center. The CMC also lends a hand with one-on-one career counseling, peer counseling, and group training sessions on topics such as writing a resume, salary negotiations, and how to work a career fair. Students also have access to the school's alumni base, which is "strong and actively participates in recruiting and networking."
Last year, the mean base salary for Kenan-Flagler grads (U.S. citizens) was $93,004, with a high of $125,000. Eighty-seven percent of graduates also received signing bonuses. Real estate, marketing, investment banking, and consulting are the most popular career choices, and a plethora of companies recruit on the UNC campus. Here is an abbreviated list of companies who hired three or more Kenan-Flagler students last year: American Express, Bain & Company, Bank of America, The Boston Consulting Group, Citi, Credit Suisse, CSE Consulting, Deloitte Consulting, DuPont, Eli Lilly and Company, Goldman Sachs, IBM Corporation, Johnson & Johnson, JPMorgan, Kraft Foods, Lehman Brothers, Lowe's Companies, McKinsey & Company, McNeil Consumer & Specialty Pharmaceuticals, Morgan Stanley, Procter & Gamble, Wachovia Securities.
