Students Say - Academics
"Close proximity to New York City," an "excellent reputation in New York and elsewhere" (not just for the MBA program but for the entire school, as "SUNY has a worldwide reputation"), and a "small incoming class with a diverse population" that ensures students won't get lost in the crowd are among the top reasons given for choosing the MBA program at Binghamton University. It also doesn't hurt that it "all comes with an extremely reasonable price tag."
The four-semester MBA program at Binghamton University employs "an extremely team-based approach" to education "that replicates real-world business in a way many other business programs do not," students here inform us. This is especially true in the first year, during which the program covers core essentials. One student explains, "The first year of the program requires students to stick with a set group of students to work on projects, presentations, papers, and cases. It can be difficult at times, but the lessons learned are crucial for the real world." Students also feel that "the cohort teams are really good for discussing with prospective employers, as it shows the ability to work together with many diverse people to come to one end result." The school also offers a Fast Track MBA to Binghamton undergraduates; the program allows them to earn both a BA and an MBA in five years, no small feat considering that a Binghamton MBA requires 69 credits, "more than any other university."
For a state school, BU provides excellent service. Students tell us that "The school really tries to adapt to the latest management concepts and ideals" and that administrators "continually make improvements to meet all of our needs." Professors here "want to see their students succeed and are happy to give the time to help them with any hardship they may face in the MBA program." The only knock on them is that "Many are foreign," so that "sometimes it is difficult to understand what is being said due to accents." Most often, however, instructors "can communicate easily with the students, and they do not use their native language even when conversing with students from the same country, which is very professional." Another asset to the program is that "the alumni that are in highly respected companies are great, and everyone really tries to pull for other Binghamton students."
Students Say - Admissions
Applicants to the Binghamton MBA program must submit two copies of official undergraduate transcripts for all college work, two letters of recommendation, a personal statement, a resume, and GMAT scores. Work experience, while preferred, is not required. Additionally, international students must submit a certified statement of financial responsibility and TOEFL scores (minimum acceptable score is 580). A basic understanding of calculus is "strongly recommended" for all incoming students; strong calculus skills are necessary for those interested in studying finance or operations management.
To attract minority applicants, the School of Management offers the Clifford D. Clark Graduate Fellowship Program for Underrepresented Minority Students. According to the school, "These fellowships are granted to students entering both master's and doctoral degree programs and carry stipends of between $6,800 and $12,750 (depending on discipline) for the academic year plus a full-tuition scholarship. Renewals or graduate assistantships may be awarded in subsequent years, depending upon availability of funds."
Students Say - Campus Life
"First-year classes for the fall are all held in the evenings" at Binghamton, which "leads to very long days, especially for those who also have part-time jobs" and thus hampers extracurricular involvement. As students progress through the program, however, the school offers "many opportunities for interested students to get involved, from the GSO (Graduate Student Organization) to the GMA (Graduate Management Association)." The latter "implements various activities throughout the year: coffee hours, open bars, networking events," "horseback riding, bowling, etc." The university also "has a great Division I athletic department that provides exciting competitions for the students to attend," and many do.
The city of Binghamton "has lots of things going for it besides the downtown bar scene. For one thing there is a hometown hockey team and baseball team, an opera house, numerous playhouses, and theaters, too. We are also the carousel capital of the United States. Binghamton is ethnically diverse as well, there are often ethnic festivals going on throughout the Southern Tier. Plus if you are a golf fan, we were home to a PGA tour event for 35 years, and now we are home to a Champions Tour Event." Also, "living expenses here are not much," especially when compared to the cost of living in much of the rest of the state.
Students Say - Careers
For a small program, Binghamton does a good job of bringing some major recruiters to its relatively remote location. One student informs us that "we have powerhouse recruiters from Credit Suisse, Goldman Sachs, the big four accounting, all the engineering firms, as well as many others. Without question the recruiting at this school is on an incredible climb upwards. More and more powerhouse companies are coming to Binghamton, who in the past have not." The Career Development Center here offers counseling services, career workshops, resume-development services, resume-referral services, a career-resource library, and access to the alumni network.
Top employers of Binghamton MBAs include Ernst & Young, Deloitte, KPMG, Lockheed Martin, and Target. Ninety percent of all graduates remain in the Middle Atlantic States or New England. The average starting salary for a Binghamton MBA graduating in 2008 was $54,409, with those in finance and accounting doing best (average starting salary $64,666).
