Students Say - Academics
Brigham Young University, the educational Mecca of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter- Day Saints (commonly referred to as ‘the Mormon Church'), "is truly a hidden gem," according to its students, who point out that "BYU consistently ranks near the top of the nation in return on investment." That distinction results from a combination of factors: low tuition, excellent quality of instruction, and an "incomparable alumni network." Unsurprisingly (given its church affiliation), "BYU stresses ethics in business," a fact that appeals to the school's predominantly LDS student body. One student points out the program's "emphasis on social change and corporate social responsibility. Many of the students have lived or worked in third-world countries and have a strong desire to give back and improve the world around them." Students also love that the BYU MBA is "a smaller program that enables students to have working relationships with faculty and opportunities to do more than in larger programs," but "is large enough to have a good network while small enough for the network to have a family-like feel. We are a very tight-knit group in the BYU MBA program," especially important since "much of the coursework is done in groups" here. BYU "has a fantastic reputation for accounting, corporate finance, and human resources," and "the marketing program has also grown to become a strength" and is now one of the fastest growing and high-profile majors" on campus, with its "students getting internships and job offers at top CPG, technology, and retail companies." The school's organizational behavior and human resources program "is superior," with recruitment "beginning one month into class. There are many excellent companies who come to campus in October. Excellent companies came and left here empty-handed because students had so many options. Also, it's an HR track in an MBA program, which exposes us to both HR and business, and companies really value that." BYU professors "typically had experience teaching at Harvard, Stanford or Wharton, where they earned awards for their teaching quality. I believe they chose BYU for the same reason that I did: The culture can't be duplicated elsewhere."

Students Say - Admissions
A completed application to the Marriott MBA program includes an application form, personal essays, an official GMAT score report, official transcripts for all post-secondary academic work, three letters of recommendation (one academic, two professional), an honor code commitment form, and a personal statement of intent. An interview is required; the school contacts applicants who have cleared initial screening to set up an interview appointment. International students must submit all of the above and must also provide financial disclosure forms and, if appropriate, TOEFL scores. Full-time post-undergraduate professional experience is highly recommended but not required; those lacking such experience are expected to demonstrate other outstanding qualifications through testing, undergraduate work, etc. Personal attributes are also considered. While students need not belong to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, "an understanding of and a commitment to support the church's mission are necessary."

Students Say - Campus Life
BYU's commitment to its MBA program can be seen in the recent completion of an extensive expansion project. The newly erected Tanner Building additionâ€"a four-story, approximately 76,000-square-foot structure built directly west of the existing buildingâ€" has added about 50 percent more space and includes: tiered case rooms, flat classrooms, team study areas, open study areas, MBA program offices, faculty offices, conference rooms, and a New York-style deli. Life on the BYU campus presents "many opportunities to socialize and network with other classmates. For example, one of our fellow students is a chocolate expert, so we are having a gourmet chocolate tasting event. In addition, almost every week there is a cultural awareness mixer or an opportunity to hear from well-known guest speakers. So far, we've heard from the CEO of Citigroup, the whistleblower from Enron, and many more very recognizable business leaders." Extracurricular life also includes "a plethora of opportunities to enter case competitions. Local companies partner with the school to sponsor web analytics competition, business plan competition, social change competition, and venture capital competition." Students' spouses and families receive excellent support at BYU; writes one MBA, "The Spouses Association takes care of the needs of spouses, creates baby sitting and playgroup, organizes dinners to be brought to families after childbirth."

Students Say - Careers
Career services at Marriott are provided by the Steven and Georgia White Business Career Center, which school materials describe as "the focal point for the school's placement, internship, and field study efforts." Facilities include a reference library, interview rooms, a large presentation room, 17 interview rooms, and an eRecruiting system. School materials identify nearly 100 companies that recruit at the Marriott School. Students praise the "top-notch career placement people" and the "committed and talented alumni network." School promotional materials list the following recruiting companies that visit the BYU campus: 3M, American Express, Amgen, Bain & Company, BMW, Caterpillar, Centex, Cisco, Citigroup, DaimlerChrysler, Dell, Deutsche Bank, Eli Lilly, FedEx, Ford Motor Company, General Electric, Goldman Sachs, Honeywell, JP Morgan, Lockheed Martin, Nike, NBC, PepsiCo, Rolex, Union Pacific, Vanguard Group, Wal-Mart, and Zions Bank. About one-quarter of BYU MBAs enter the finance and accounting sector; about one in six takes a job in human resources. Students tell us, "We are starting to compete in the private equity and venture capital field really well."
