School Says - General Information
Saint Louis University is a Catholic, Jesuit university ranked among the top research institutions in the nation. SLU fosters the intellectual and character development of over 13,000 students on campuses in St. Louis and Madrid, Spain. Founded in 1818, it's the oldest university west of the Mississippi River and the second-oldest Jesuit university in the United States. Through teaching, research, health care and community service, Saint Louis University has provided one-of-a-kind education, leadership and service for 192 years.

SLU's urban, residential campus in St. Louis includes the new $82 million Edward A. Doisy Research Center and $81 million Chaifetz Arena, a new on-campus multipurpose arena and a hub for Billiken sports activity.

With nearly 100 undergraduate programs and more than 50 graduate and professional programs, including highly ranked programs in business, law and engineering, students find the one that's right for them. Students also take advantage of special opportunities such as direct-entry nursing and health sciences programs, early admission to the University's medical and law schools and an extensive list of study-abroad programs. SLU education extends far beyond the classroom.

The University offers students something rare in higher education: the opportunity to study at a place where academic achievement and scientific advancement unite with a commitment to community and Jesuit values. Here, 99 percent of faculty members hold a Ph.D. or the highest degree in their field. SLU students get to do more than just sit in class; they collaborate with premier scholars and researchers and conduct research that will transform their disciplines Ââ€" and the lives of others.

SLU students come from all 50 states and nearly 90 foreign countries. Six months after graduation, 93 percent of our graduates are either working or in graduate or professional school. SLU alumni have written books and produced Broadway musicals, become mayors of major cities, presidents of countries and even worked with Mother Theresa the Haitian Ambassador to America, Raymond Joseph. Billiken alumni are also highly successful doctors, lawyers, physical therapists, engineers and social workers.

The St. Louis metro region boasts nearly 3 million people, with more than 350,000 residents in the city itself. The city's small-town feel coupled with the amenities of a large city has helped St. Louis garner its ranking as one of the best cities for young professionals. The city is home to the famous Gateway Arch, a number of Fortune 500 and Fortune 1000 companies and a variety of cultural, historical and sporting attractions.

Students don't have to travel far from SLU to experience these great St. Louis attractions. Just steps away from SLU's urban campus is one of the city's esteemed arts districts, rich with theatre and music. Students also can hop onto a light rail train or bus and sample international delicacies in one of the many delicious restaurants before hitting St. Louis' can't-miss concert scenes. With three professional teams and a number of independent teams, St. Louis always is high on any sports fan's list of must-see cities.

But that's not all SLU has to offer. The University expanded internationally in 1969 by establishing a campus in Madrid, Spain. The Madrid campus has been recognized by Spain's higher education authority as an official foreign university, the first United States institution ever so recognized. Each semester, more than 600 students arrive at the Madrid campus for a study-abroad experience. Attracted by the quality educational reputation of the St. Louis and Madrid campuses, more than 250 universities in the United States send study-abroad students to SLU's Madrid campus.

Students Say - Academics
The Jesuit tradition really resonates in everything that happens at SLU, a place where "Service, social justice, and political awareness are stressed at every level of your education." This "medium-sized Jesuit school with solid academic programs and a campus that feels close-knit" is best known for its "great premedical programs," which include "a great direct-entry physical therapy program" and "a well-respected accelerated nursing program" as well as the school's pre-med tracks. Students also speak highly of SLU's offerings in business and pre-law, as well as its unique programs in aviation and "the one-of-a-kind nutrition program with a culinary emphasis." Since SLU is a Catholic school, nearly all programs here require a solid core curriculum including classes in religion and ethics. Students praise the way this curriculum "forces you to examine your worldview from the moment you step on campus and helps you discover what your beliefs really are." Academics, especially in the high-profile departments, can be rigorous. In this regard, SLU is "perfect for high achievers and scholars who strive for the best. The professors are nice and professional but are very stern about assignments being turned in on time." One student says, "When it comes to natural sciences, particularly chemistry, biology, etc., I think SLU can be very hard. I guess it works, though. A nursing degree or physical therapy degree from SLU is very highly respected in the health care profession."

Students Say - Campus Life
SLU manages to provide everything your parents wish for your college experience and still everything you wouldn't want them to know about, undergrads here confide. Campus life includes "a lot of fun activities the student government puts on...such as outdoor movies, balls, and dances." "Dorm life is very strict and not much fun." The party scene "is decent," because "there are a lot of off-campus living opportunities that are close by and great places to live. The Lofts and Coronado are two great off-campus apartments that are extremely close by." College sports are in the mix. "With the new arena, basketball games are becoming the thing to do." Greek life "is great at SLU." The fraternities and sororities "provide many parties and events for the students and activities such as laser tag and barbecue" to help the students "become involved" and "get to know each other." Being in St. Louis means "great city life around, but most of it is for students that are 21 and above," and "off-campus eateries that are close by and range from Drunken Fish Sushi to Rally's Burgers." Students tell us "safety is a huge importance in SLU since we are so close to the city, [and fortunately] there is usually a DPS officer that is always close by to help students in need." Service is a big part of many students' lives, and "SLU's Jesuit influence encourages the student body to become active in the community. SLU's efforts to encourage community service give many students their first taste of the real world and better prepare them to venture out into it after graduation."

Students Say - Student Body
SLU "has a pretty homogeneous student population of white, upper-middle-class, students coming from a private high school (usually Jesuit, and single-sex) or from the suburbs of bigger Midwestern cities. The girls wear Uggs and North Face fleeces and dye their hair, while the boys live in their . . . American Eagle jeans." Many "have been in the Catholic school system their entire lives," although there are also "quite a few kids who went to public school and kids who are lower-middle-class." Students are generally committed to the concept of service; and they "put forth a lot of community service hours into the surrounding area, from Habitat for Humanity to the Big Brothers/Big Sisters programs. There are plenty of clubs students use to help raise money for their organizations."
