School Says - General Information
Nestled in the rolling hills of Long Island's North Shore, Five Towns College offers students the opportunity to study in a suburban environment that is within easy access of New York City. Founded in 1972 by a group of educators and community leaders who wished to provide students with an alternative to the large university atmosphere, Five Towns College is a nonsectarian, coeducational institution that places its emphasis on the student as an individual. Many students are drawn to Five Towns College because of its strong programs in music and music-related fields. Five Towns College is an institution of higher learning that offers two-year, four-year, master and doctoral degree programs. From as far away as England and Japan and from as close as Long Island and New York City, the 1,000 full-time students who attend the College reflect a rich cultural diversity. The College's enrollment is currently 60 percent men and 40 percent women; there is a minority population of approximately 30 percent. The College's music programs are contemporary in nature although classical musicians are also part of this creative community. Coeducational living accommodations are available on campus. Each Residence hall contains single and double occupancy rooms equipped with private bathrooms, broadband Internet access, cable television and other amenities. The College serves the cause of business, education, and the performing arts with emphasis on Jazz/Commercial music. The most popular programs are audio recording technology, broadcasting, journalism, music performance, music business, music and elementary education, theatre, and film/video production. The College seeks to foster, in those who participate in its intimate community, a noble commitment to ethical, intellectual, and social values and seeks to encourage and stimulate the pursuit of lifelong learning. It encourages its students to respect the differences of others as well as to develop their own unique talents to the fullest. To ensure that students place such high demands upon themselves, the College seeks out for its faculty, men and women who are committed to excellence in teaching, guidance, and scholarship. School Says - Academics
The comprehensive program in Jazz/Commercial Music provides both a common core of technical studies and a foundation for specialized courses in the student's major are of concentration. The Audio Recording Technology includes the study of the theory of sound, recording electronics, engineering procedures, music production techniques, and audio/video post production in a sequence of courses designed to develop practical and technical skills. The Composition/Songwriting concentration provides intensive instruction in harmony, orchestration, counterpoint, MIDI, songwriting, keyboard techniques, form and analysis, commercial arranging and composition. In the Music Business concentration, the coursework includes the technical, legal, production, management, and merchandising and licensing aspects of the music business. The Musical Theatre/Vocal concentration includes coursework in music, movement, acting, voice, general education, and musical theatre production. The Performance concentration provides a foundation of specialized courses such as music history, harmony, counterpoint, improvisation, ensemble performance and private instruction. The Music Education program leads to New York State provisional certification in grades K-12. The Business Management program is designed for students planning to pursue careers as business management/marketing executives with firms in the area of record and music production, broadcasting, concert promotion, radio, television, theatre and communications. The Childhood Education program fulfills the New York State Education Department requirements for the Initial Certificate in Childhood Education (1-6). The Film/Video program is designed to provide the knowledge and technical expertise required to succeed in the wide range of career paths this interesting and expanding field has to offer; including cinematography, motion picture editing, and multi-camera television production. The Broadcasting students explore the technical, legal, programming, and marketing issues that guide mass media companies. In the Journalism concentration, students explore a variety of different journalistic styles, including news, script, feature, magazine, editorial and review writing. The Theatre Arts Program is designed for students interested in a career in the performing arts field as an actor, entertainer, director, stage managers, lighting or sound technician or any other related aspect of the dynamic and rapidly expanding entertainment industry.

School Says - Admissions
Five Towns College seeks students who are generally able to benefit from the programs of study available at the College and who will enrich the lives of their fellow students by actively participating in the academic process and debate. Although all applicants are considered, the College encourages applications from students who have attained a minimum high school grade point average of 80 percent, and SAT-1 scores of approximately 980 (old version) or 1350 (new version). Prospective students must submit a completed application and an official high school transcript. Transfer students must also submit official transcripts of all college-level work attempted. International students must present a TOEFL score of at least 520 (paper test) or its equivalent. The Admissions Office will consider the entirety of a candidate's application before rendering a decision on admissions. Students submitting GED scores of at least 2500 are also invited to apply for admission. Students may be admitted for deferred entrance or advanced standing. The College does accept students on an early admissions basis, although early decision is available. Admission into the Bachelor of Music program is contingent upon passing an audition demonstrating skill in performance on a major instrument or vocally. Applicants for the Theatre program are also auditioned. An interview may be required. Students are accepted on a rolling admission basis and are notified shortly after all required documents have been filed with the admissions office. New students may begin their studies at the start of either the fall semester or the spring semester. There is an application fee of $35. School Says - Campus Life
The College's serene 40-acre campus, located in the wooded countryside of Dix Hills in the town of Huntington, New York, provides students with a park-like refuge where they can pursue their studies. Just off campus is Long Island's bustling Route 110 corridor, the home of numerous national and multinational corporations. New York City, with everything from Lincoln Center to Broadway is just a train ride away and provides students with some of the best cultural advantages in the world. Closer to campus, the many communities of Long Island abound with the cultural and recreational opportunities. The College is located within the historic town of Huntington, which is home to the Cinema Arts Center, InterMedia Arts Center, Hecksher Museum, Vanderbilt Museum, numerous restaurants, coffeehouses, and quaint shops. The nearby shores of Jones Beach State Park and the Fire Island National Seashore are world renowned for their white, sandy beaches.

School Says - Cost Aid
For the 2010-2011 academic year, the tuition at Five Towns College was $18,400. Miscellaneous fees are approximately $600, and books are about $1,000. Private instruction fees for music students are $775 per semester. For information regarding on-campus room and board charges, contact the Five Towns College Admissions Office.Although Five Towns College is a modestly priced private institution, we recognize that tuition and fees is beyond the reach of many students. Five Towns College responds to the needs of these students with a comprehensive Financial Aid program. Approximately 72% of all FTC students receive some financial assistance. The Financial Aid Office administers several million dollars of student aid monies every year. FTC students are eligible to participate in all Title IV Student Financial Assistance programs, including Pell, FSEOG, FCWS, and the Direct Student Loan Program. New York State Residents may also participate in the Tuition Assistance Program (TAP). Five Towns College also administers approximately $2,000,000 in grants and scholarships to deserving students.
