Old Dominion University is a young and vital institution leading Virginia into the twenty-first century by embracing new technology and providing the educational environment of the future. The university offers a wide range of programs of study in engineering, science, health sciences, business and public administration, education, and arts and letters. Old Dominion University offers 68 undergraduate programs, 60 masterÂ's degrees, 35 doctoral, and two educational specialistsÂ' degrees. Physical therapy, engineering management, coastal physical oceanography, and nuclear physics have gained national ranking. In the university's dynamic 75 -year history, it has produced numerous award-winning faculty, Rhodes and Truman scholars, and a USA Today Academic All-American. Founded in 1930 as a division of the College of William and Mary, Old Dominion is one of the 101 public universities with the Carnegie Foundation's Doctoral / Research Universities - Extensive distinction. Proud of its past, Old Dominion constantly looks to the future and prides itself on expanding research and teaching programs. Over 17,000 undergraduate students and 6,000 graduate students are enrolled at Old Dominion University. The University is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.

The students at Old Dominion share a special sense of excitment derived in part from the rich tapestry of backgrounds, cultures and ages represented here. The 1,400 international students and the 200 student organizations reflect the diversity that exists on campus. The Office of Student Activities and Leadership (OSAL) sponsors a wide variety of programs which complement academic excellence, offer a supportive environment,and engage students in exciting learning experiences. Old Dominion University has 18 varsity sports and affiliated with NCAA Division I. WomenÂ's teams are Basketball, Soccer, Field Hockey, Swimming and Diving, Lacrosse, Tennis, Golf, Sailing, and Rowing. MenÂ's teams include Basketball, Soccer; Football (2009), Wrestling, Baseball, Tennis, Golf, Swimming and Diving. Old Dominion teams have won 18 national championships and 4 individual titles.

Old Dominion University is a selective university that reviews applications on an individual basis. Each application is read and reviewed by the admissions staff. While academic performance is a vital factor in the decision-making process, Old Dominion also takes into account any athletic, student organization, or community service involvement. The average freshman admitted to Old Dominion ranks in the top third of his or her graduating class; earned a minimum of 16 high school academic units in English, math, science, foreign language, and social studies; and is actively involved in school and/or community-based clubs, organizations, and athletics. Approximately 50 percent of the transfer students have earned an associate degree or have completed 60 semester hours at another institution prior to enrolling at Old Dominion.

School Says - Campus Life
Old Dominion University is located in Norfolk, Virginia, ranked by Money Magazine as the best large city in the South. A few miles north of downtown Norfolk, the campus is less than an hour from historic Williamsburg, Yorktown, and Jamestown, and about 20 minutes from the Virginia Beach oceanfront. Norfolk affords tremendous opportunities for students to enjoy festivals, professional sports, world-class theater, and numerous business and industry employers for co-op, internships, and post-graduate employment. Washington, D.C., and the Blue Ridge Mountains are only a few hours away. Located near the world's largest naval base, Old Dominion University maintains a close relationship with the military and offers excellent opportunities for Navy ROTC and Army ROTC students. The local climate has been rated as one of the best in the nation by the National Weather Service, allowing for year-round outdoor activities. The 188 acres of the Old Dominion University campus stretch from the Elizabeth River to the Lafayette River. The University offers a small-college look and feel, with tree-lined walkways, a mix of old and new buildings, and colorful gardens and ponds. One of the most exciting places on campus is the University Village, with its impressive centerpiece, the Ted Constant Convocation Center, which opened its doors in Fall 2002 and hosts everything from basketball games to concerts and commencements. The Village is part of the world-class campus environment which features a newly renovated and nationally respected library, and new facilities including engineering and computational sciences, oceanography and physics building, a performing arts center, a university center and student union, athletic fields and recreational facilities, and new residence halls.

School Says - Cost Aid
Tuition and fees for average full-time undergraduates in 2006-07 were $5,910 for in-state students and $16,470 for out-of-state students. Room and board were $6,640. In addition, there is a fee of approximately $800 for books and supplies, and $158 in required fees.Old Dominion University participates in all federal and state financial aid programs. In fact, nearly 55 percent of Old Dominion students receive financial aid in the form of grants, loans, work-study, and academic merit based scholarships. Students often find it easy to attain part-time employment on campus or in the local area. Old Dominion offers more than $6.5 million in scholarships. All incoming freshmen who submit their applications and credentials by the December 1 early action deadline and transfer students who submit their applications and credentials by March 15 are automatically considered for merit-based scholarships. To be considered for endowed scholarships, students need to complete the Free Application for Student Financial Assistance (FASFA) and submit the form to the Department of Education by February 15 for priority consideration. Students should also complete the section of the admissions application for additional financial assistance. The university does not require a supplemental scholarship application. Annually, Old Dominion is one of the first institutions in Virginia to award financial aid to prospective students.
