Students Say - Academics"A Baptist school settled in small-town Tennessee, Carson-Newman College is "a great place" for students "to get a conservative liberal arts education," while they continue "to grow spiritually and religiously." Christian philosophy is at the heart of the Carson-Newman academic program, and students praise their school as a place "where fellow believers can become spiritually mature, obtain an excellent degree of choice, and serve others and Christ." Offering a range of traditional majors, including degrees in business, nursing, and fine arts, students praise their academic experience as well balanced but challenging. In addition to their major field, students are required to complete course work in a variety of general disciplines, as part of a core curriculum designed to teach communication skills, logic, Christian background, personal and social responsibility, and world perspective. A junior enthuses, "I feel that I am receiving a well-rounded education and enjoy not only the classes pertaining to my major, but also the classes that are part of the general education requirements." Carson-Newman professors are described as "personable, accessible, friendly, committed to student's success," and demonstrate a laudable interest in each student's personal growth. In fact, students say the close relationships they develop with their professors are what make Carson-Newman College special. One junior raves, "I love my professors! . . . They're very intelligent, always accessible, and caring about my academic career and life in general. I feel like we're family.""
Students Say - Campus Life
"While the school's religious affiliation certainly influences life at Carson-Newman, students nonetheless describe a pretty typical college atmosphere. A freshman explains, a large portion of the student body consists of "the basic little Baptist kid. They go to church and go to school, but then during the rest of the time they engage in typical college activities." On campus, there are plenty of clubs and student activities. For example, every semester "A movie is shown outside with free popcorn and drinks, and we have theater productions frequently, music and art shows frequently, trick-or-treat during Halloween, and a tree lighting at Christmas." While some undergrads party on the weekends, other students think of "more creative things to do." Off campus, "There is a wealth of outdoor activities nearby due to the proximity to mountains, parks, and lakes." In addition, "Many students travel regularly to Knoxville in the evening or on the weekends to eat, party, or just find something fun to do.""
Students Say - Student Body
"Whether you'd characterize the typical Carson-Newman student as holding "very strong ultra-conservative, Southern Baptist views," or as a "moderate Christian with an open mind," might depend on your own perspective. Under any circumstance, faith is a uniting factor amongst the Carson-Newman student body, most of whom are "White, Christian, usually Southern Baptist, from an upper-middle-class home." However, students remind us that there is also, "a large subculture of athletes," some ethnic diversity, including a sizable Korean population, as well as "some atypical students who fit in pretty well but are usually labeled . . . âartsy.'" On the whole, most students describe their classmates as extremely friendly, outgoing, and "easy to get along with." Eventually everyone finds "their own little niche.""
