Students Say - Academics
Lycoming College is one of the ever-shrinking group of selective undergraduates-only liberal arts and sciences institutions in the United States, which is a fact it touts proudly in its promotional literature. Students recognize the benefits of the school's approach, extolling the "school's focus on a student-centered liberal arts education" and professors who "truly care about the students and do whatever they can to ensure the students are getting the education they are paying for." Strong programs in biology, chemistry, business, sociology, archaeology, and English stand out among the 34 majors offered. With only 1,500 undergrads and favorable student-teacher ratio, Lycoming can provide "small class sizes, so we really get a chance to develop good relationships with the faculty. All of our professors know us by name, and they are more than willing to help us with the material outside of class. They even invite us to picnics and dinners at their homes! In the labs, we get hands-on experience that isn't possible at a larger school." The school's size also allows administrators to "try to get to know the students, inviting us to meetings where they interview people for new positions (e.g. director of security), to meetings with the mayor, and to talk about the school." Students also appreciate Lycoming's history of "great job placement" and its reputation with graduate schools.

Students Say - Campus Life
Lycoming College "has a very active student body," with most students involved in sports and/or clubs. "It is almost a guarantee that if you look out your window you will see groups of students on the quad playing ball, reading under the trees, having snowball fights or sledding down the hill on cafeteria trays," one student observes. On the weekends "everyone stays here, and there is always something going on, from sporting events to campus movies," as "The Campus Activities Board (CAB) does a great job of providing entertainment on campus, with prerelease movies every weekend as well as movies on the campus TV station." Five fraternities and sororities mean "There's generally a party if that's what you're into." Many here feel that "Williamsport is a small town and...that there's nothing to do outside of the college," but "This is untrue. Williamsport actually has a relatively active art, music, and entertainment scene (for a small town)."

Students Say - Student Body
Lycoming may "remind you of one big high school," particularly a "typical preppy, white, middle to upper middle-class" high school. As in high school, students tend to break down into predictable social sets; "There are the Greeks, jocks, and artistic groups, and then everyone else finds a group pretty easily." While "Lycoming is extremely uniform in terms of race/social demographics, the student body is quite diverse in terms of interests and personalities. Because Lycoming offers a few unique programs-archaeology, creative writing, and a lacrosse team, to name a few-the school attracts a wide range of students." Most here "are involved in several clubs and sports" and "hold some type of leadership position in at least one."
