School Says - Student Body
With more than 100 different co-curricular clubs, activities and organizations on campus, Emmanuel is a community alive with a strong sense of mission, a vibrant, confident faith and a joyful spirit. Emmanuel students are challenged to act, to lead, to give generously to others, and to get involved. Students find ample opportunities to take part in academic clubs, honor societies, media clubs, performing arts, cultural organizations, intramurals, leadership roles and special interest groups. They put their beliefs into action through educational programs and volunteer service through Campus Ministry. As an NCAA Division III school, Emmanuel offers an athletic program that includes 17 varsity teams, including the recently added men's and women's lacrosse programs.
School Says - Academics
Emmanuel offers a rigorous liberal arts and sciences curriculum supported by an individualized approach. The academic requirements of Emmanuel College have been established and designed to ensure that every student experiences the range of skills and content that are implied by the liberal arts mission of the College. Through required courses drawn from a cross-section of the liberal arts disciplines, students are exposed to models of analytical reasoning, symbolic thinking, observation, creativity, critical thinking, moral reasoning, self-knowledge; and significant intellectual content from the fields of history, literature, the arts, philosophy, religion, the social sciences, the natural sciences and the study cultures outside the United States. Additionally, such courses require student work that enhances the ability of students to comprehend and to function intellectually in the variety of disciplinary modes that constitute the liberal arts.
Emmanuel College's Office of Academic Advising provides students with the support needed to attain their academic goals and serves as a model of the Emmanuel experience. All first-year students receive an academic advisor, who assists them in navigating the first few semesters of college, helping them to understand the liberal arts and sciences curriculum and its value, and to develop a unique academic plan.
All new students are also required to take a first-year seminar of his or her choice in the fall or spring semester. In small classes, working closely with each other and a member of the faculty, students are introduced to the academic traditions of the liberal arts and sciences, and to the expectations and values of our academic community.
Each year, students who demonstrate superior academic ability and promise are invited to participate in Emmanuel College's Honors Program. This four-year academic and co-curricular program combines a rigorous, discussion-based curriculum with complementary opportunities such as cultural activities, faculty-directed research projects and service in the community. The program begins with the yearlong Honors Colloquium for first-year students and includes: four interdisciplinary, writing intensive seminars; a service-learning component; and an independent research project.
For those students who are uncertain of a major or are exploring majors, Emmanuel College offers the Majors Exploration Program (MEP), which helps students explore careers that will be satisfying and subsequently determine an appropriate major for that career path. Through MEP, students complete the online career tool, FOCUS, which teaches students about themselves and their career ideas through questions about their own interests, values, personality, skills and extracurricular activities.
Additionally, students have access to Emmanuel's Academic Resource Center (ARC), which offers specially designed programs to help students meet their academic goals, and one-on-one guidance from the Internship and Career Development Office.
