"Methodist-affiliated Bennett College is "a small liberal arts college" in Greensboro, North Carolina that "empowers women, specifically Black women." Professors are simultaneously "challenging and enlightening" yet "very personable." "Instructors here push you to your limit, because they know you can do better," explains one student. While faculty members may pile on the work, they are "very accessible." Professors have been known to "hold study groups in the parlors of dorms after regular teaching hours." Administrators are also approachable and contribute to "a very open and positive vibe throughout the campus." "Several unique programs" include "Womanist Religious Studies, Global Studies, and Africana Women's Studies." Dual-degree programs in engineering are available in conjunction with nearby North Carolina A&T State University. There is also a collaborative nursing program affiliated with Howard University. Students here seem excited about their school and its mission. They tell us that "Bennett College is a school on the rise." "Bennett is about creating a holistic student who excels academically, socially, and spiritually" and who is ready to "compete in the complex global society." "My cousin---who was also the first doctor in my family---went to Bennett, and I admired her for the woman who Bennett helped nurture her into becoming," declares a chemistry major. "I wanted that. I wanted to be that type of woman.""
Students Say - Campus Life
"During the week, a day in the life of a Bennett Belle usually consists of hitting the books. "We are an academically focused school," explains a sophomore. "Most students (honestly) are thinking about their schoolwork." Some students say that "Bennett has a lot of cultural and social activities on campus." The choir is nationally renowned and travels the country, for example. Greek life is available but not very prominent. Many students participate in local public service projects as well. However, others clamor for "more activities on campus." On the weekends, the Bennett campus is pretty dead. "Girls' nights in" can get pretty old. A few Belles go home. Others head for "the mall, movies," events staged by Greensboro's "very active arts and theater community," and other off-campus attractions. While Bennett has no party scene to speak of, Greensboro is an extraordinarily hopping college town. Students frequently "interact with the neighboring colleges" and attend local campus parties. "
Students Say - Student Body
"A huge percentage of the students at Bennett come from a state other than North Carolina. The "phenomenal women" here describe themselves as "very creative and interesting." They are "friendly and very open" and have "morals and character." Bennett is a bastion of "rich history and heritage" and full of "tradition with many memories." "Sisterhood and education" reign supreme here. Self-awareness, community service, academic excellence, and spiritual growth are ideals that these students take very seriously. "Everyone strives to be the Bennett Ideal," which means carrying yourself like a "young lady who is intelligent, respectful, religious, and helpful." "Due to the small size, everyone knows of each other" and there is a "very good support system." First-year students "either weed themselves out" or, more likely, "become molded into a Bennett Belle." "
