Located in New Orleans, LA, "Xavier University is a historically black, Catholic University that promotes learning, leadership, and service." On a national level, "Xavier's strength are its life sciences and pharmacy programs," and the school holds the claim-to-fame of being "number one in placing African Americans into medical school." However, "what people don't know is that every academic program is great" at Xavier. A freshman attests, "Being a History major, I know first-hand the liberal arts professors are the best you can find." No matter what your discipline, XU professors are intimately involved in the learning experience, and "if a student shows that they are in a classroom to learn, professors will go out of their way to make sure that he or she understands the material." On top of that, there are plenty of resources to help the struggling student, and "Xavier takes good care of their science majors by providing tutoring centers for each area, and requiring we attend drill sessions every week." The downside to the XU college experience is "Xavier focuses so much on academics that it is easy to get stressed." However, students agree the rigorous coursework is well worth the investment. A current student shares, "The course load is difficult so, while your final grade may not be one that you like, if you put in the time and worked hard, you finish knowing the material."
Students Say - Campus Life
While they are an outgoing and friendly bunch, Xavier students say there isn't much time for goofing off or going out at their serious school. A sophomore explains, "There are things on campus, but it is definitely not a party school. I think that most students appreciate this aspect though, because that's what they expected when they chose Xavier." Socializing can actually be a bit academic at times, as participation in study groups is "heavily promoted by the school." In addition to being academically prudent, study groups can be "a good way to meet other students." On campus, "the University Center is also an area where many students can be found in between classes and where most activities occur. Because the school is so small, it is not hard to meet people and most have the same interests." Despite the demands of coursework, students say it is possible to achieve a balanced lifestyle. A senior tells us, "It is hard to juggle school, work, and play, but with some discipline it can be done." When it comes to social activities, "Greek life is extremely popular and many students strive to be a part of different groups." However, students admit the administrative rules on campus-such as the nightly curfew in the dorms and strict alcohol policy-can be a bit "old-fashioned." As a result, many students look for their entertainment off campus. "Many people go to the movies, clubs, or house parties," and, thanks to the school's New Orleans location, "Bourbon Street is also a major attraction for the college students."
Students Say - Student Body
United by a common desire for success, Xavier students describe their classmates as "very focused and goal-oriented." Fortunately, their interest in success does not translate into competitiveness, as most Xaverites are also "friendly and easy to get along with." When it comes to demographics, students explain, "Because Xavier is a historically black university, the majority of the student body is African-American. The student population is about 75 percent Black, nine percent White and Asian, and 16 percent other races (roughly)." As is the trend at universities nationwide, the school is majority female, and about 72 percent of the undergraduates are women. Xavier is Catholic-affiliated; however, a wide range of religions are represented in the campus community, and "less than half of the school's population is Catholic." Generally speaking, XU students make a good mix, and life at Xavier "seems like a huge community of all different kinds of people working together." Socially, students admit "everyone has their cliques." However, on the whole, "acceptance and equality permeates throughout the entire student, faculty, and staff population."
