As a member of the Texas Tech University System, Angelo State offers strong academic programs in a highly personalized environment that provides expansive learning opportunities, including undergraduate research, in almost 100 majors and concentrations. The low student-faculty ratio (19/1) allows for an individualized educational experience. ASU graduates are sought by graduate and professional schools, such as law and medicine. ASU turns out graduates who can think critically, adapt to a changing world and succeed in various environments, whether in technology, business, the arts, the sciences or graduate/professional school.
Academically, the university is organized with six colleges – Business; Education; Liberal and Fine Arts; Nursing and Allied Health; Sciences; and Graduate Studies – as well as 21 academic departments. School Says - Campus Life
Angelo State University features a 268-acre campus in San Angelo, Texas. The campus is lined with native live oak and pecan trees plus imported palm trees, providing a park-like environment for students. In addition to being one of the prettiest campuses in the state, it is one of the safest. Additionally, ASU's Management, Instruction, and Research (MIR) Center, located just north of San Angelo, is an impressive 6,000-acre teaching facility that supports the university's extensive agricultural programs.
San Angelo is the center of a thriving community of 100,000, and the city nearest the geographic center of Texas. For some, San Angelo is the true heart of Texas. For others, it is where Central Texas and the Hill Country meet West Texas. Either way, it is a community of big-hearted and hard-working people who are proud of their Texas heritage.

Students Say - Academics
Angelo State University, a member of the Texas Tech University System, is "a small school with big opportunities." "Bang for your buck" is reportedly ample. In addition to a "relatively cheap tuition price compared to other public universities in Texas," ASU offers tremendous financial aid and "excellent scholarship opportunities." Academically, this place is a "science haven." "The technology here is great." The on-campus planetarium is one of the biggest and best at any school, anywhere. Students also praise the education, agriculture, and nursing programs. "Classes are generally small." Professors "are on a first-name basis with their students" and "get to know you personally." As far as teaching, some profs are "pretty much awesome" while others are merely "subject matter experts, not teachers." The administration is "relatively well organized." On the whole, students tell us that they feel "supported and encouraged." "I'm uber-happy to be at Angelo State and can't imagine being anywhere else," gloats an accounting major.
Students Say - Campus Life
ASU's campus is "very small and easy to navigate." Students note "it can be really hard to find a parking space on campus" and note the need for "more student parking around certain buildings." Some facilities are "not big enough." Students also warn, "Be cautious of the cafeteria food." "Campus life is very active." "ASU does an excellent job of trying to involve its students." "Many people play intramural sports." The University Center is popular for "killing time." Activities on offer include ping pong, a wealth of videogames, and "Texas hold 'em tournaments." For nature lovers, there is a state park nearby with biking and hiking trails. By the time the weekend rolls around, some people "go to the bars and clubs." "House parties" are also frequent. On the other hand, Greek life is paltry. One student describes the surrounding city of San Angelo as "a very 'old person' town." Another student says that "people coming from small towns to San Angelo are able to keep entertained outside of school fairly easily," observes a shrewd first-year student. "Conversely, people coming from larger cities find it hard to have fun because, out here, you do need some creativity in finding things to do." For serious leisure, "you have to drive three hours to Austin."
Students Say - Student Body
While drawing students from throughout Texas, including the major metropolitan areas, the typical student at ASU attended "a very small high school" in "a tiny west Texas town." Most come from "lower- to middle-class" families. Almost three quarters receive financial aid. Students describe themselves as "friendly, hardworking," and "career oriented." They tend to be "conservative." "There aren't a whole lot of cowboy hats, but it's relatively traditional," explains a junior. "There is nothing too radical around here." There are some "dullards," but "academics are pretty important" to most students. It's not uncommon for students to "use ASU as a bridge or a stepping stone and transfer to a larger university after one or two years to finish their degrees." Nontraditional students are quite common as well. "There are all different types of people and all different ages," notes a junior. "This makes it easier to fit in."
