Students Say - Academics"East Tennessee State University is "an inexpensive local university" that "feels much more intimate, smaller, and more congenial" than its actual size. Health sciences are very big here and there are plenty of nursing majors and pre-med students. The business and education programs are also notable. The academic experience at ETSU for some students is "all over the place." "I've had a wide range of professors," a sophomore tells us, "some know exactly what they are talking about are helpful and others are distracting or disrespectful when approached for help." "Do not be put off by boring Freshmen classes," another sophomore advises, "you will be more than compensated by your upper-level classes." "Some professors are "the greatest people you will ever meet." The administration mostly keeps everything "running smoothly." "However, workers within the bursars office are uncaring and nonhelpful." Also, "trying to get into classes needed to graduate can be a nightmare.""
Students Say - Campus Life
""There is an extreme shortage of parking" on this campus. "Every morning, there is a parking spot war." On the plus side, the campus is nicely wired and the recreation center is "amazing." Socially, students say ETSU has a "laidback" "mountain environment." Clubs and intramurals are plentiful. "There is both the partying crowd and the non-partying crowd." Most of the festivities occur on Thursday nights, though. "ETSU is largely a commuter school" and "the campus is dead on weekends." There is a somewhat noticeable Greek scene but it's "not a big deal" unless you are involved. Some students call surrounding Johnson City "boring," and "relatively rural." Other students love the place. "The community as a whole is friendly to ETSU," they say, and "there is actually an okay music scene." Also, the Blue Ridge Mountains provide a stunning backdrop. "It is very beautiful," declares an awed junior, "probably the most beautiful place I have ever been." "If you love nature, it would be tough to do better than right here." For more urban fare, it's an "easy drive to larger cities" such as Knoxville, and Asheville, North Carolina."
Students Say - Student Body
"Students here are "generally very friendly" and "ETSU is a very harmonious school." "Nobody is scared to give a smile or head nod as you walk past them," observes a freshman. "There's some diversity as far as race is concerned" but "most of the students are from the area, which means a mostly white population." Students are typically "small-town southern kids" who grew up "in the vicinity of Johnson City" and are "looking for a solid but cheap education close to home." There are "a good deal of nontraditional students" as well. "Most students at ETSU are commuters," relates a senior. "They come to campus for class and that is it." "Some students are very religious" and "a little old fashioned." "Not everyone is as accepting of alternative lifestyles as they would claim.""
