Students Say - AcademicsA small, liberal arts school with a decidedly friendly touch, Muhlenberg College encourages a spirit of community between students, faculty, and staff. Muhlenberg professors are "warm, willing to talk, and really nice," giving students the confidence, resources, and opportunities they seek in an undergraduate education. A senior enthuses, "If you take advantage of it, you can get close with your professors, do independent work, and pave your own way in preparation for whatever you want to eventually do or become." A student in the pre-medical program adds, "The science classes are very difficult, but there are a lot of resources, such as workshops, tutoring, recitations, and meeting with the professor personally." While academics are challenging, they aren't so rigorous student don't have time for a well-balanced lifestyle. A junior explains, "Muhlenberg allows me to take a full course load each semester while still giving me time to have a job, have a social life, and be connected with the organizations with which I want to be affiliated, in a comfortable and close-knit setting." Things tend to run smoothly, and "the administrators have reached a balanced approach where they are not visible in everyday activities but are clearly in control." At the same time, many students say they've had the opportunity to brush elbows with the school's top administrators. A freshman remembers, "I couldn't believe it when, during the first week of classes, President Helm sat down with my friends and me at brunch and asked us how our first week was going."
Students Say - Campus Life
Academics are taken seriously, but personal life and extracurricular activities are also an important part of the experience at Muhlenberg College. A sophomore explains, "Academically, Muhlenberg can be rigorous at times, depending on what you place on yourself, but activities outside the classroom are also given a lot of emphasis, so it's not like all you're ever doing is studying." On campus, students participate in intramural sports, attend campus events, or join student clubs. In addition, "all of the sports teams have games nonstop." In dorms, in the suites, in the fraternity houses, or off-campus, "parties are commonplace on the weekends." At the same time, students reassure us "partying happens very often on and off campus, but it is rarely out of control like on bigger campuses." A senior adds, "People definitely work hard here, but then we let loose on the weekends. Saturdays aren't big study days, but Sunday nights in the library are packed." Although first-year students are not allowed to have cars, "there's a shopping center within walking distance," as well as "a shuttle service that will drive students to any place in Allentown, such as the bowling alley, movies, mall, ice skating rink, mini golf, and restaurants." At the same time, students remind us Allentown doesn't offer a multitude of social options for college students. For more cosmopolitan options, the school's location between New York and Philadelphia is unbeatable.
Students Say - Student Body
Muhlenberg is a patently "friendly campus" where everyone finds a niche and "people smile at you as you walk by them." The overwhelming majority of undergraduates hail from middle-class, suburban families in New Jersey, Long Island, or Pennsylvania, creating a "fairly homogeneous" student body. Preppy is the dominant dress code, though there is also a big group of "artsy, theater-type students" who come to participate in the school's excellent theater program. Fortunately, "the Muhlenberg community is extremely accommodating to all types of students," and varying interests and lifestyles are represented and accepted. A student attests, "Typical students are usually white and middle-class, however, there is a great amount of diversity with people of different religious backgrounds, social backgrounds, and sexual orientations." Adds another, "At first glance we appear to be a very homogeneous campus, but upon closer inspection and by personal experience, it is clear the student body is diverse and is very accepting of that diversity."
