"Jamestown College is a small, Presbyterian-affiliated liberal arts school that lies about 100 miles west of Fargo, North Dakota. "The greatest strengths are the professors, class size, the beauty of the campus, and the sports teams," says one student. "One-on-one attention" and a focus on career preparation are the other big selling points. Career-oriented majors such as nursing and education are especially strong. "We also have good music programs," notes a sophomore. The Career Center "constantly sends out emails to students about internships and job fairs." "The administration knows you by name" and is "very active on campus." "The small town feel of it makes things more personal," explains a nursing major. Jamestown's "helpful and encouraging" professors "want to see the students succeed" and "go out of their way to say hi to you when you walk past them in the hallways." "The professors give us their all," says a history major. Student gripes here mainly focus on the infrastructure. Some buildings "need to be remodeled," for example. Also, the Internet connection can be "bad." Overall, though, students are very satisfied. "I absolutely love going to school here," enthuses a music major. "It really has such a great feeling and I would never change anything.""
Students Say - Campus Life
""Homework" occupies students during the week at Jamestown College. But when they have a moment to spare, athletics are also a big part of life and students who aren't participating "always fill the stands at sporting events." Residence halls usually provide a solid selection of activities. "Religious life is there if you want to take part in it," notes one student. "There are religious activities, but not near the point of inundation, and they aren't widely attended." Otherwise, "it's a small school so you have to make your own fun," advises a first-year student. "We watch movies and hang around the dorms quite a bit." The surrounding town has "absolutely nothing to offer besides the typical restaurants, a sad bowling alley, and, of course, bars." "Drinking is big for some students." We feel compelled to warn you that it gets mighty cold around here during the winter and there's no small amount of snow. Weather permitting, many students "go to Fargo on the weekends" for more cosmopolitan fare."
Students Say - Student Body
"There's a noticeable contingent of students here "from different countries who seem to find it very easy to fit in." Otherwise, as you might expect, it's hard to gather much ethnic diversity at a small private college in North Dakota. Jamestown students describe themselves as "very friendly and helpful." Many of them "grew up in a small town," and are actively involved in campus life and "aware that the main purpose of college is to get a liberal arts education." "The typical student is an athlete," explains a junior. "The majority of those who aren't athletes are involved in the fine arts, band, choir, theatre. And then there's everyone else, which is actually a pretty small group." There are "very few atypical students.""
