Tucked away in Middletown, Connecticut, Wesleyan University is a dynamic institution "committed [to] catering to its undergraduates." The school certainly attracts those with a high level of "intellectual interest and curiosity" and students "really engage their education in a meaningful way." Fortunately, there's a "lack of...competitive cutthroat [behavior which] really promotes a community of learning." Undergrads at Wesleyan also appreciate "the lack of core curriculum," which gives students the flexibility to really "explore new areas" and "obtain a broad education." Academics here are "very challenging" but students find their classes immensely "rewarding." This is wholly due to professors that are "always available and eager to speak with students, and have a terrific passion for their work." Many of them maintain "intimate relationships with students" and a junior tells us that "having a meal with a professor at their home is not a rare occurrence." While a few students find that "the administration is full of red tape," others insist that they are "generally very responsive to student needs" and "very invested in the happiness of the students." As one senior concludes, "I feel that the administration as well as faculty work hard to make Wesleyan a strong community where everyone's voice matters."
Students Say - Campus Life
Wesleyan students have eclectic interests and passions and the social scene really reflects that. An intellectual group, undergrads can frequently be found deep in conversation with their peers, discussing anything from "the ethics of grading [or] the rendering of astrophysics into tangible graphics [to] the analysis of the feminist meanings of a Spanish worksheet." Of course, you shouldn't let this deceive you. These students also know how to kick back and have fun. "From the traditional frat party, to a gathering at a program house, [to] a performance or movie with friends in somebody's living room, Wesleyan offers a variety of social scenes for students to get involved in." Activities certainly run the gamut. An African-American studies major shares, "For fun, people go to performances, sporting events, lectures, protests, restaurants, open mics, parties, campus events, etc." On any given day these lucky students might enjoy "anything from an Indian dance festival to an open forum on the economic recession to a frat party that's also a charity event for a school in Kenya." Of course, Wesleyan students are also quite adept at making their own fun and they can be found "sledding on the snow, rolling down the hill, playing Duck Duck Goose, [and] having awesome corny dance parties."
Students Say - Student Body
Undergrads at Wesleyan are fairly adamant about the fact that they cannot "be pigeon-holed." While many insist "there are no typical students," others concede that there "are a few traits that often connect [everyone]." Most people "are interested in engaging with the world around them, often in hopes of improving it." Indeed this is a "passionate" group who are very "socially-conscious, politically-aware, and [into] activism." Moreover, Wesleyan students are "driven," "intellectually curious" and "eager to learn and experience new things." These are kids who are "serious about academics" but also know how to "relax and have fun." They are also "very proud to be part of a diverse community" and are always excited to "meet new people." Another commonality is that undergrads here tend to "have a variety of interests." As a Spanish and film studies double major illustrates, "Your best friend might be captain of the football team and double majoring in chemistry and art studio." Perhaps most importantly, students at Wesleyan "aren't afraid to associate with many different kinds of people." A content senior sums up, "Students here are committed to creating a strong and close-knit community made up of open-minded people."
