There are many opportunities for students to become involved at both Mannes and the main campuses of The New School. At Mannes College of Music, the Dean's Student Advisory Council and the Office of Student Activities welcome student involvement. Also, many New School committees have seats available to interested students. The New School also has active student organizations dedicated to issues and activities of interest to undergraduate and graduate students as well as other extracurricular activities. Students are encouraged to form new organizations as well.
School Says - Academics
Mannes is one of seven academic divisions of The New School. Its musical strengths are therefore linked to a university known for its progressive outlook and deep commitment to the arts. Mannes students may take advantage of a complete range of course offerings at The New School, and Mannes's position within the university provides academic and cultural resources that are unobtainable at most independent colleges of music. Within the music profession, Mannes is especially noted for its intensive training. All students take rigorous and extensive courses in theory, ear training, harmony, analysis, and counterpoint. Mannes's pioneering curriculum in these areas is heavily influenced by Heinrich Schenker's analytic approach and is now being emulated by many music schools throughout the world.
School Says - Admissions
