School Says - Admissions
The Office of Admission considers an applicant's record of academic achievement, performance on appropriate standardized tests, letters of recommendations, and other indications of academic promise and personal motivation.

To be admitted, students must earn a minimum of 16 academic units at an accredited high school or receive an appropriate score on the GED test. Units of high-school study should include 4 English; 2 mathematics (elementary algebra, plane geometry, or 10th-year mathematics); 2 foreign language; 1 history; 1 science; and 6 electives, (a minimum of 3 in academic subjects). Requirements can vary from program to program.

Applicants must submit an official high school transcript, official standardized test scores (SAT I or ACT), and a signed, completed application for admission. St. John's welcomes transfer students, who constitute a large portion of the undergraduate student body. Transfer applicants should forward all academic records -- high school and college -- to the Office of Admission. Applications may arrive any time, with the exception of pharmacy degree candidates, whose applications are due no later than February 1.

School Says - Campus Life
St. John's park-like Queens Campus is in a quiet residential area near to the Grand Central Parkway. The Staten Island campus is a few miles from the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge. Each campus is a short drive to the unsurpassed attractions of Manhattan, including the Museum Mile, Greenwich Village and Times Square. The Manhattan campus is located in the heart of the Financial District, near Wall Street, TriBeCa and City Hall. St. JohnÂ's Oakdale location is on the South Shore of Suffolk County. The Rome Graduate Center is located at the Pontificio Oratorio San Pietro, off Via Aurelia on Via Santa Maria Mediatrice.

Students Say - Academics
Like its hometown of Queens, New York, St. John's moves inexorably forward without forgetting its history and traditions. The school's administration is committed to constantly "updating the university's facilities." Recent improvements include "a state-of-the-art athletic training facility and revamped cafeterias," as well as an upgrade to science facilities, added townhouse residences for students, and a new 127,000 square foot University Center. In addition, the school distributes "brand-new laptops to all incoming students" and has "done a tremendous job of implementing technology throughout the campus," which "is completely wireless except for a few athletic fields and parking lots." On the traditions side of the balance, the school maintains "a lot of policies and politics opposed by typical college students [such as] the visitor policies in the dorms." Many praise St. John's' study abroad programs and Institute for Writing Studies, which provides writing support to all students. When it comes to classroom experience, "professors are professors. Like [at] any school, some are better than others." Students report that "the experience you have at St. John's really depends on what you do with it. Don't take a professor just because he/she is easy-chances are that means they suck! If you are self-motivated...you will find challenging professors." Big-picture people will see that St. John's offers "a quality private education" and, in many instances, a "generous" financial aid package that translates to an overall "low cost."

Students Say - Campus Life
Students say "There are a lot of opportunities to get involved on campus," at St. John's. "Our student government works very hard on student engagement, creating popular events to foster the University community." Still, "Life for most St. John's students is not centered around the campus. We have NYC as our playground, so time not spent in classes is often [spent] off campus." For those who prefer off-campus activities in their spare time, the school helps to make that possible. There are "shuttles that can take us into the city [aka Manhattan, to those outside New York City] and on weekends...to the mall." In addition, the "school runs programs to see Broadway shows for free." Even without the school's help, however, New York is at students' fingertips; almost everything the city has to offer "is just a subway ride away." "Clubs, sports events, parties, restaurants"-you name it, NYC's got it, and St. John's students sample it. The faithful will be happy to know that "St. John's makes it easy to incorporate a spiritual life with an academic one." For the altruistic, there are "community-service initiatives galore."

Students Say - Student Body
Because it is "located in Queens, the most diverse place on Earth," it's no surprise that St. John's itself is "very, very diverse." Though "everyone gets along exceptionally well," getting along well doesn't equal total integration. Each "ethnic group tends [to] hang around with itself. Yet students' external differences belie less visible similarities. Many are may be the first in their family to attend college, so a strong work ethic is pervasive. Everyone "wants to achieve something greater than their parents." The second major similarity stems from the first: "students here generally have many responsibilities outside of their schoolwork."
