Best Business Schools (Northeast)
Students Say - AcademicsThe "Jesuit mission and identity" of the Haub School of Business at St. Josephs University results in an "âeducate the whole person approach" that appeals to many Philadelphia-area MBAs (particularly those who attended St. Joseph's as undergraduates). "The Jesuit background of the schoolâ¦promotes a desire to make a difference and to care about others while furthering your career," one student explains. Others note the "focus on value and ethicsâ¦and environmental sustainability" and the "integration of worldly concepts and viewing the business field from a multidimensional point of view" as particularly Jesuitical aspects of a Haub MBA. A typical student sums up, "I strongly agree with Jesuit education principles of inclusion and diversity and think values such as these are important foundations for anyone working in a global business market." SJU's predominantly part-time student body say that the Haub MBA is "a well-regarded program" in the Philadelphia area that "provides an ideal combination of academic quality, location, and price." Part-timers are especially enamored of the "flexibility to pick and choose your classes to better suit your schedule," the evening and Saturdays course scheduling, and the availability of the entire program at two locations, one on the school's primary campus on City Avenue in Philadelphia, the other at Ursinus College in Collegeville, PA. In addition, St. Josephs provides online course offerings. The SJU MBA "offers a great mix of academic teachings and real-life experiences," according to students. Professors "have a lot of experience in the private industry" and "are able to apply their private industry experience to their teachings." "They are great at applying theory to practical, everyday situations and throughout the world" and are "genuinely interested and passionate about their field of study, and it shows through their teaching," MBAs here report. Teamwork is paramount in the program; it "seems like every class has a group project that incorporates your current job. It's a nice blend of theory and practical applications." Students point out that "working in teams to get projects completed is a helpful tool in learning to deal with other students and their work ethics."
Students Say - Admissions
Applicants to the Haub MBA program must submit the following materials to the school: an official transcript from each undergraduate and graduate institution at which credits were earned; an official GMAT score report (not more than 7 years old); two letters of recommendation; a current resume; and a personal statement of 250 to 500 words outlining career objectives and the value of an MBA in reaching those objectives. International applicants must submit all of the following as well as a statement of financial support. International applicants who attended undergraduate institutions at which English was not the language of instruction may have their transcripts translated and interpreted by World Education Service. Students whose first language is not English must submit an official TOEFL score report. Saint Joe's admits MBA students for fall, spring, and summer terms.
Students Say - Campus Life
"Saint Joseph's University truly is your home away from home," students tell us, extolling the "tight-knit community of individuals seeking the same level of intellect and values" here. For those with the time to spend on campus, "there are many activities and clubs in which to participate." "There are constant opportunities for extracurricular activities, internships, meetings, etc.," as well as "opportunities for joining the gym," students report. Very little of this activity is directed specifically toward MBAs, however. While their "life is busy with assignments and presentations," they are not so busy with extracurriculars. Students say the school could "provide [more] programming for MBA students such as clubs to provide greater interaction and experiences for more students." Haub MBAs are "hardworking, caring, and interested in making a difference in the world, not just making money." They are typically "interested in social and political issues facing the community." Their ranks include "a lotâ¦of recent college grads who went to graduate school because of the economy and job market." Although most work in addition to attending school, "everyone is willing to work together on projects. It is hard finding a meeting time, but everyone is flexible in making it work. Other students are interested in helping you succeed in the MBA program."
Students Say - Careers
The Career Development Center at Saint Joseph's serves all undergraduates, graduate students, and alumni. In the past, students have told us that the office is "typical of parochial Philadelphia colleges like La Salle and Temple," with a recruiting base largely from the Philadelphia area. While some wish for a broader range of recruiters, others "think SJU caters to its students' wants, and most want to stay in the Philly area. That's why they came to school here in the first place. If you are unsure about what you want to do after [the] MBA, Career Services has a great assessment system, where they meet and counsel you on where you would be a good fit." Saint Joseph's MBAs also benefit from "tremendous alumni networking."
