Best Business Schools (Southeast)
Students Say - Academics
The Else School of Management at Millsaps College offers the academic strength of a graduate business program while maintaining the "intimate learning environment" typical of a small liberal arts school. With the ideal mix of "small class sizes and excellent professors," the academic experience is personalized and rewarding. Classes are all small and discussion-based, and professors "instruct students as individuals rather than as merely a class." Emphasizing real-world applications of academic principles, Millsaps professors "constantly bring new ideas and concepts to the table as the business world changes." In fact, most instructors "have worked in the private sector before joining Millsaps," and therefore, they "can steer the lecture to other topics outside of a textbook and focus on real-life scenarios they have encountered." Offering MBA and MAcc degrees, the Else School confers the only graduate degrees at Millsaps College. As such, it is not surprising that the business school feels a bit more like a small college than a typical graduate program. A "casual atmosphere" pervades the academic environment, and "Everyone is on a first-name basis for the most part." Within this close-knit community, "almost all of the teachers have been at Millsaps for many years. They are easily accessibleâ€"especially by e-mailâ€"and know everyone's name." Even more impressive, professors "really get to know the students as a person. They know their interests and value their opinions and questions in class." Like the teaching staff, "The administration is always there to help and they solve any problems quickly and efficiently." Overall, students note just one anomalous deficiency: There is only "one Academic Advisor for almost 200 students." Many of Millsap's MBA candidates are working professionals, and the teachers and administrators are highly sympathetic to the unique needs of students who are balancing work, home life, and school. A case in point, one part-time student tells us that, after missing a few classes towards the end of the semester, "my professor met with me during my lunch hour for two days to make sure that I mastered the skills. This was so unexpected from a graduate professor, especially since she did not have to be at the school during those times." On the other end of the spectrum, professional work experience is not a prerequisite of the program, and therefore, many Millsaps undergraduates begin their MBA directly after college. Students who make this choice say "it was an easy transition from undergrad at Millsaps to post-graduate study." At many business schools, there is an obvious divide between younger full-time students and older, part-time students. At Millsaps, however, students mix comfortably. In class, professors "strive to meet the needs of a diversified business skill set for graduate students." In fact, students feel, "The collaboration of both types in group-oriented activities, as well as the classroom, is a definite benefit to the program. The younger students add a more laid back attitude while the older students inspire a deeper sense of ambition."

Students Say - Admissions
To be considered for admission to Millsaps MBA program, students must submit official GMAT scores, undergraduate transcripts, two letters of recommendation, and a two-page essay. The graduate admissions committee may also request an interview. Students can apply for admissions for the fall, spring, or summer semester, and they may apply for entrance directly after finishing their undergraduate studies.

Students Say - Campus Life
As a part of a vibrant undergraduate campus, Millsaps "offers more than just the classroom experience, even for graduate students." In addition to intramural sports, lecture series, and other campus events, the business school hosts "a few parties to get everyone together, such as a Christmas party, a baseball game, a football game or a happy hour. These are fun and a lot of the students participate." Aside from official gatherings, most working students say, "the course load is more than enough to keep us busy." However, they do find time to "meet for study groups" or "get together off-campus for dinner or drinks." On the "pretty" Millsaps campus, "There are a number of available resources to help students…[ including] free printing, access to computers, [and] study rooms for group projects and meetings." Located in the Fondren District of Jackson, Mississippi, Millsaps is situated in the middle of "an Art District that has the right combination of activity and calmness." Students "love" the Jackson area, saying "the people in Jackson are wonderful" and the community is defined by southern hospitality.

Students Say - Careers
Throughout the South, Millsaps maintains an "impeccable reputation" for academic excellence, and many say the Else School operates "the best MBA program in Mississippi." In hometown Jackson, "Millsaps graduates are highly recruited" and highly respectedâ€"a major reason that many MBA candidates chose the program. Outside the South, however, options are a bit more limited. A student explains, "It is true that Millsaps will help you get a great job in Jackson, but it won't really help if you want to get a job in another part of the country as it is not that well-known." "There isn't a great career center" at Millsaps, and you won't find dedicated business school career counselors, as you might at larger programs. Yet students don't regret their decision to attend Millsaps, saying their education is "not just a job fairâ€"actual learning and teaching takes place." In addition, "the relationships you form with professors are extremely helpful as you move through the program and act as a confidence booster when you pursue opportunities outside the classroom." On that note, within the business school the "administration closely focused on the needs of professionals after graduation and on networking with alumni in fields of work."
